Hi everyone! I’m Knitting_Is_A_Comfort,

I’am a beginner inspired to start knitting a tea cup cozy as a project. Knitting is a comfort when I’m traveling, stressed and feeling depressed or have anxiety.

The materials that I’am using for my project are the following:

Worsted yarn (sherbet orange colour)
Bamboo knitting needles 4.0 mm
Yarn needle and scissors

I’am stitching 14 stitches and creating 30 rows that equal 3 inch.

The issue that I am experiencing is that when I am casting on my stitch by going under and through the loop wrapping the yarn around my needle with my index finger as I am pulling the yarn through the loop and releasing with my thumb I am getting confused and keep creating additional loops.

I can’t figure out how I keep making that mistake.

Can you keep me understanding what I might be doing wrong? How can I fix this mistake?

I have also attached pictures.

Thank you so much for your response to resolve my concern!

Hello
It sounds like you are using a long tail cast on method. It’s not my personal favourite so I’ll let others help with that. If you want to try a different cast on method the knitted cast on is pretty good for beginners as the option of making the new stitch is spthe same as the motion of knitting.
Here’s a video if you fancy trying it

It’s a useful cast on method to know for a range of projects which might require you to cast on extra stitches part way through a project.

Creations,

Thank you for this video! It was very very helpful. Great idea to change to a slip knot. I will use this method instead.

I think using the cast on that works is the way to go so if the knitted cast on is working for you, use it! I do like the long tail cast on. Is the problem with an extra strand only when you start the cast on or on every stitch you cast on?

Your stitches look great!

Thank you for your response!

Well, I have noticed a significant improvement since I changed to the slip knot method.

I have noticed the following :

  1. The edges of my tea cup cozy are not uneven anymore.
  2. I’m not adding additional loops as I cast on.
  3. The pattern of my stitch are even.
  4. The edges of my new tea cup cozy are straight all around.

I’am very pleased with this new method. I feel more confident that my tea cup cozy is going to look more professional.

Attached are my before and after pictures.

I’am having fun and enjoy my knitting project. Its relaxing and calming.
