Which cast on method should match a 1 × 1 rib which is bound off in pattern?
I want to make a sewn on vertical rib button and neck band which begins bottom front goes up, around the v neck and down the other front to end at the bottom. The rib at the hem is top down bound off in pattern, the finishing side of the button band can be easily matched when bound off but my cast on is currently not matching.
If i can’t get one to match i think I’ll work the band in 2 pieces from back neck so they both end at bottom hem with the same bind off.
Would you consider taking out the bind off and matching it the cast on for the ribbed band? There are matching cast on/bind offs like the tubular that are very pretty.
Some of these seem more successful than others and they are for stockinette.
And as you suggest working the bands top down from the neck will solve the match.

You could use a provisional cast on then put the held stitches back on the needles and use the same bind off as for the bands too.

Noooooooo! I can’t take out my bind off it was 335 sts and as much as i will frog when needed I couldn’t bare to take that out or try to get the tubular bind off correct and even over that distance. It would defeat me. The bind off was taxing enough as it is (trying to maintain even tension across a larger number than I’m used to binding off for. My tension is fine enough when i knit but i have to remember to continue breathing when i bind off in a place that is visible).

I think I’ll try again at casting on in pattèrn (one of pattys suggestions) with the knit cast on (maybe i did it wrong) and the long tail alternating knit purl cast on, never tried this before but I’ve spotted a video. I don’t know if it matches i had no luck finding a decent picture. I’ll follow the video and see what happens.
The section i want is only 11 sts compared to the other 300+ I’ve already done.
If i work down from back neck what do you suggest for the join there? Maybe a short crochet seam as it aligns the rib in opposite directions without jogging? Or just a mattress stitch seam and never mind the jog, it’s just a little section which would be barely noticable on the back neck.
Or something else perhaps?
I’ll try this, i am wondering if it will be a bit odd looking with it being a half stitch jogged by changing direction.

I’ve done it with other patterns to get matching edges, just not on rib.
I’ll update when I’ve had a try tomorrow.
Now I think about it I’ve never tried it with rib. So yeah, the jog could look odd. Try a swatch, right? Now my coffee has kicked in…I think your idea to do the band in two pieces is likely your best option.

I’ve frogged it!
I said yesterday i wouldn’t undo the bind off and today I’ve removed the entire rib.
Slightly gutted after the effort put in but i discovered this morning there was a wave in the ribbing ~~~ which means the gauge was not right for it to sit flat. The swatches i made looked good across about 20cm width but having done the full hem, front back front, it rippled.
As a secondary observation it was perhaps too heavy too. I do need a bit of weight at the bottom as the cardi is quite light and floppy without a bit of extra weight at the hem, but this was too much.
Oh well.
Back to swatching, again.

I don’t feel so bad about it now.
It bothers me that I don’t know what to knit in its place rather than the fact of undoing it.
I liked the band so much until I saw that ripple.
