Hi. I’m very frustrated at the moment. I am still pretty new to knitting (1 1/2 years) self taught. I have made approx 15-20 items from patterns ranging from beginner to a couple experienced. Most times I can figure out what I’m doing wrong, but this times I’ve knit 6 rows and torn it out 5 times. The pattern I am doing is supposed to be an easy enough pattern but I’m stumped. Pattern is by Drops and is called Blue Breeze. The step I’m having problems with reads: Work 6 rows in GARTER ST - read explanation above - AT THE SAME TIME cast on 2 new sts at the end of every row = 47-49-51 sts (12 new sts).
The explanation says to knit back and forth.
I do a long tail cast on, then knit back and forth 6 rows. I’ve tried two methods from YouTube, the 1st one was from 10 hours or less and you put your right needle between the last 2stitches, wrap, pull through and then place back onto left needle repeat. The 2nd method was from knit by Judy where I turn work and basically knit another stitch then place it back onto the left needle then repeat. I’ve tried to pay very close attention to how they turn the work, yarn and how they place it back on left needle but I continue to get a twisted mess. There are no stitch definition either. I am including a pic of what the edge looks like after I finish row 6.
Any suggestions would be so appreciated. I’ve usually been able to figure out my mistake but this time I’m totally lost. Thanks in advance. Felecia
Hi. Welcome. To cast on stitches at the end of a row, move the right needle to your left hand and then use the knitted or cable cast on. There are videos for both in the Free Videos section, see tabs at top of page. After you cast on your new stitches, turn and knit as usual. HTH
This looks pretty clear also. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0KRgwJcBv4
Welcome to KH!
Sounds like you’ve tried the cable cast on and then the knit cast on. Either should work. Those are good cast ons to use. I’d be patient about how this looks until you’ve finished the 6 rows. Alternatively, since it’s just a few sts at the end of each row, you could use the backwards loop cast on which is easy to do (sometimes a little tight to knit into for the next row) and will work here.
It’s a good looking poncho and the rounded effect at the hem is worth getting to work. Also, there are more cast ons as the pattern goes on.
