i am making this dog sweater for a friend … and i am stumped at the instructions for the leg openings … i am up to the joining row where i put it all back together to knit from one ball but i am unsure of what to do
i have cast off the stitches to make the leg openings and now i have three balls of wool.
a) how do i cast back on? am i casting back on into the first stitch?
b) which ball of yarn do i use now? do i keep going from the first one and drop the other two?
Leg Openings: Next row: (RS). K5 (5-7-11). Cast off 4 (6- 6-10) sts. K36 (46-56-80) (including st on needle after cast off). Cast off 4 (6-6-10) sts. Knit to end of row.
Note: All Leg sections are worked at the same time using separate balls of yarn for each section.
Beg with a purl row, work 1 (1½-1½-2½) ins [2.5 (4-4-6) cm] in stocking st, ending with purl row.
Joining row: K5 (5-7-11). Cast on 4 (6-6-10) sts. K36 (46- 56-80). Cast on 4 (6-6-10) sts. Knit to end of row. 54 (68- 82-122) sts.
Usually a knit or cable CO works well, or you can do a backward loop CO. Do it on the same needle as the working yarn, so you can just put the loops on it, or for the knit/cable, move the needle to the left hand, do the cast on and move it back to the right hand. The stitches won’t get worked until the next row. Just use the yarn where you are at that point and ignore the other ones.
I just started this Bernat Hoodie Dog Coat pattern and you got a little further than I did. I don’t know how to (RS) K5 (5-7-11). Cast off 4 (6-6-10) sts. K36 (46-56-80) (including st on needle after cast off). Cast off 4 (6-6-10) sts. Knit to end of row.
How do I cast of 6 sts. I have 7 on right needle and lots on left needle?
Ok, there’s a video to help out with this too. Assuming you’re making the 3rd size, you’ve knit 7sts, now knit 2 more sts and pick up the 8th st and lift it up over the 9th and drop it off the right needle. That’s one st bound off. Knit another st and do the same thing, lift the 9th st over the last st knit and drop it off the needle. Keep repeating this until you’ve lifted 6sts over and off (see videoif you need to). Then knit 55 more sts (it’ll be 56 including the st left on the right needle after the bind off) and repeat the bind off for the second leg, then knit to the end of the row.
To cast off a stitch you have to have 2 of them, and you don’t take them from the sts you’ve already done.
So after the k7, knit 2 more and lift the first one over, k1 and lift 1 over, k1, and cast off, until you’ve cast off 6 sts; count the sts you lift over, not how many you knit. Then you have 1 st on the needle from the cast cast off stitch and you knit 55 more. Then knit 2 more and cast off 6 and knit to the end of the row. Many seamless sweaters are done like this too, you’ll have 3 sections and it may be better to have separate yarn for each one if you knit all the stitches as one row rather than finishing each section separately.
Thank you so much. I now have the 7 stitches I knitted and I casted off 6 stitches as per instructions from you talented knitters and 1 stitch from cast off. Shoot I thought I was only suppose to have 1 stitch left from this 7 stitches. DUH!!! Now I will knit 55 stitches so I have 56 total stitches. Not including those original 7 stitches.

It’s me again. This sweater is hard and I just don’t understand the pattern and should not have started it since it is not easy.

You’re doing great. You’ve knit across binding off sts along the way. Now you’re going to turn at the end of the row and purl back across 7sts, drop the working yarn, skip the bound off sts, start a new end of yarn and purl across the 56sts, drop the yarn, skip over the bound off sts, start another end of yarn and purl across the final 7sts. You’ll have 3 separate sections of knitting on the needle (7sts–56sts–7sts) each with its own strand of yarn attached. You’re going to work all 3 at the same time with its own end of yarn. After you’ve knit like this for x many inches, you’ll knit across with one end of yarn, casting on over the bound off sts and you’ll be back knitting only one large section of the sweater.
I am making a dog sweater also and I am at the end of the leg openings. For the joining row, my pattern says:
Pat across 5. Turn. Cast on 6 std. Turn. Pat across 55 std. Turn. Cast on 6. Turn. Pat to end of row. 77 stitches.
I am working from 3 sets of needles. I don’t understand the turn and cast on. Why can’t I just use one needle, cast on as I go for both legs, incorporating all three sections onto one set of needles? Am I missing something?
Welcome to KH. Can you give us a link to your pattern (allowed after your first post) or its name and where you found it? How many needles are you working with? I am assuming that [I]std[/I] means [I]sts[/I].
Turning before casting on lets you do a knitted or cable cast on, turning again puts you back to knitting across the next set of stitches in the same row/round.
