Caron Simply Soft -- Curled Mess

Ok, so I have knit scarves with this before and it has been fine (of course, not in st). I made a scarf for a friend in st. with a garter stitch border all around. It is a big curled up mess.:gah:
I have tried to pin and block. I tried flattening it out with weights. It is still a curled mess. :hair:
I really don’t want to have to frog it…it took a long while since it is a really tightly knit scarf. :tap:

Anyone have any ideas of what the next step could be?

Thanks in advance! I appreciate it!

I wish I knew what to tell you. I know st curls up on me all the time. I hope someone here can answer, because I have alot of this yarn and projects aplenty planned for it.

I made a scarf out of ummm something similar, all I can remember is it was orange. I tried the exact same thing. Pinning it down, putting barbells and weights on top. Nothing worked. I finally just sewed up the sides (I attatched them, so the scarf looked knit in the round and not a flat piece). THat was the only thing I could do. After that experience, all my scarves just became garter.

Did you sock it in water first? With acrylic its really hard to get it to lay flat. Mostly I soak it for a few minutes then ring it out in a towel and then pin it down and let it sit for a few days to dry. It never completely comes out flat but its doable. The other thing I’ve heard people do is to do a single crochet all around the edge but if its a long scarf, whew that would take a while. Goo luck!

Oops! I mean good luck!

I think I will try and soak thoroughly and try and block again. If that doesn’t work, I will have to sew the ends together and make a tub style. Hopefully that will look ok. The scarf is 6 feet long, so frogging is not really an option…I am not reknitting this thing!

I know this won’t help for this particular project, but I’ve always had problems with st st. Both with curling and loopy edges. What I’ve started doing is slipping the first st on each row (either knitwise or purlwise) and it seems to help with both problems. It will still curl a bit, but not quite as much.

Hmm you said it’s a tightly knit scarf…that is probable part of the problem, plus add in the ST curling up anyways…you may need to reknit it a little looser.

Well, dang, I sure hate when that happens. You might try this; crochet an edge along each end or just crochet a slip stitch around the whole thing (making sure you don’t pull it too tightly to make it pucker n look really weird.) hmmmm, tryin to think of options for ya hun and it’s taking it’s sweet time (sheesh!!):aww: I’ll get back on here n letcha know if I come up with anything else. K?

You said you did a garter stitch border…how many stitches did you use for the border? There is a thread at the top of the page about curling stockinette you could check out, too.

Ummm, it might be a long shot, but have you tried spray-on fabric wrinkle releaser? It worked on some small toy parts that were driving me nuts. Give it a good spraying, then come as close to ironing it as you can and let it dry that way.

Next time… Use larger needles and make a border that’s at least 5 sts wide. Stockinette curls though, that’s why you need something else for the edges.

Thanks, I checked it out before I posted. I did 3 stitches on each edge and 4 rows top and bottom. I lightly misted and pinned to block. Let it sit for about 2 hours. Then dampened it again, and put weights on it.

Have been reading a few other posts (long ago searches) and was wondering if I should:

  1. Soak and pin straight to dry
  2. Steam with the iron

Thanks everyone for the help! :muah:

I’ve heard steaming helps. But you might not get it to lie totally flat, so don’t get your expectations up.
