I have a really nice variegated yarn that I wanted to use to make a cardigan. I’ve used this yarn before for a shawl and I really like the striping. I was looking at different knit cardigan patterns and they all had the back panel and two front panels. I realized that the striping might not match up and look wrong when I seam them together. Do you have any advice for making the striping match? Are there any cardigan patterns specifically for variegated yarn or that are worked as one piece that you would suggest?
There are pages of cardigan patterns on Ravelry that are one-piece or seamless contstruction. Many would work nicely with a self-striping yarn.
What weight yarn do you have? Here are some ideas in a variety of weights and styles.
It’s worth doing an advanced search yourself for the your yarn weight and preferred style.
It is a bulky weight yarn. Thank you for the suggestions!
Very nice. There are a number of patterns if you add bulky weight to the search. Let us know what you decide on please.
The other option is to unreel some of your yarn so that you start the body pieces with the same part of the color. This works better with some brands of yarn than others. The sleeves are harder to match, though. You can match them to each other, but probably not to the body.
Offering a different idea.
This cardigan is worked side ways and the variagated yarn would produce vertical stripes, if you like that style (this pattern is made in several colours to produce the stripes but you can ignore that part). This is 2 pieces, cuff to centre front/back × 2 and seamed (or 3 needle bind off) down the centre back. The 2 halves could be purposely different or start both with the same point of colour on two yarn balls.
I’m personally not keen on the garter button band but that could be changed I’m sure.
Or there are other cuff to cuff cardigans too.
Or circle cardigan could be nother interesting construction
Hi Janie,
I suggest knitting your cardigan top down, which is seamless, search online for “top down knitted cardigan” and hopefully you will find one that matches your gauge. Good luck!
