Can't understand instructions for hood.

Hi there! I’m knitting an old discontinued hoodie pattern from Naturally N831. I have really tried, but I just can’t understand the hood instructions for this hooded sweater. The hood is knitted in two pieces, and both sides have the same instructions in reverse of each other, so it probably isn’t an error. They say to pick up and knit 5 gst border sts, 26 neck and 24 back sts, and cast on 1st at centre back, 56sts. Then, " Row 1-p to last 4sts, k4.
Row 2- k18, turn.
Row 3- sl 1, p to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 4- k23, turn.
Row 5-sl 1, p to last 4 sts, k4.
Cont. in this manner, working an extra 5 sts on every right side row UNTIL ROW: 54 HAS BEEN WORKED.
NR - sl 1, p to last 4 sts, k4. Work 2 rows stst (with 4 sts at hood edge) across all sts.
NR - k to last st, M1, k1. Work 5 rows stst (still working 4 sts in gst at hood edge).
** Rep last 6 rows until there are 62 sts, finish with an increase row. Work 9 rows straight."
The pattern then decreases 1st on every 4th row until 47 sts rem, and casts off. My problem is the part I wrote in capital letters. If I keep picking up 5 more sts on every right side row then I run out of stitches to pick up around Row 16, so how to get to Row 54? If I start to cast on 5 stitches every right side row after row 16 then I’d have 148 sts by row 54, and the pattern doesn’t mention casting on. Later on its says to keep increasing by M1 to 62 sts, so it can’t be 148 sts So, I’m all thought out on this one, I just can’t understand what they’re expecting. I’d be so grateful if there are some experienced hood knitters that could interpret this! Thanks a lot, and hi from New Zealand, Kiwi. :waving_hand:

Hello
My first thought is it’s a typing error, depending how old the pattern is there may or may not be corrections somewhere.
As it is a series of short rows, i think it might be intended to read “stitch 54” rather than row 54, although as the rows increase in length by 5 each time it would need to be stitch 53, this would make sense i think for the following rows as “NR” reads as a wrong side row followed by 2 rows working ALL stitches (56) which would complete the short row section.

How does this sound to you?

If it’s not this I’m sure someone else will have an idea about it.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense, stitch 54. It was the row word that was confusing. I’ll try it that way and see. Thanks for getting back so quickly. :+1:

You’re welcome.
See how you get on.

If this isn’t it do ask again.
A pattern picture might also help, do you have a link to where you bought it or perhaps you can take a pic of the pattern leaflet (not the whole pattern for copyright reasons)? It oftens helps to see what something should look like.

Thanks a lot. I’m knitting it up now. Fingers crossed. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the pattern pic.
I didn’t see a pic of your hood, did it work out?

Yes, it looks a lot like the pattern. I’ve tried to upload a photo but the site won’t accept it. :expressionless_face: I’ll try a few more times. But, your advice was right, so success! Now I can finish the hoodie. Ta.

Try resizing the photo and see if that will work.
There are a number of ways to do that. Here’s one:

You knitted that up in no time!
I’m glad it worked. This hood is a great shape too, well worth the extra work of deciphering the shaping instructions. I really like the curve on it.

Thanks for posting the pic. I hope you’ll show us the finished hoody too.

Yes, now I like the pattern again, it’s a better hood shape than I expected, so am glad I asked for your assistance. When I actually finish the hoodie I’ll certainly post it. :+1:
