I have wool stuffing, 2 rolls of it, that I bought from this site and I am wondering if I can spin it. I wish my camera had batteries so I could show you, it doesn’t look at consistent in thickness as roving but I don’t mind lumpy yarn. I wanted to make a drop spindle like on Knitty Gritty and want to practice on something that doesn’t cost much since my budget is basically nil.
Can you spin wool stuffing?
Can you pull on it and make the fibers thin out? (aka, drafting?) If you can, than you can spin it to kingdom come.
I actually pulled it out last night to figure it out and, alas, the fibers are VERY short-like 2"-so there isn’t a long enough, what’s that word?..staple to spin it. Bummer, I have a lot of it lying around, destined for nothing.
Wool stuffing is usually the leftovers from the fibers that were spun. It usually has a short staple length, and may be tangled and not easily drafted. The good news is that you technically CAN spin it, but it will not be easy, and you’ll likely only be able to make a slubbed yarn.
