I have a lot of Lyon Brand Homespun yarn because my church asked those of us who can knit to make shawls for the elderly in nursing homes, hospitals, or home-bound. I recently learned how to knit socks. I was wondering if it’s possible to knit socks with this yarn? I was thinking I might do matching socks for each shawl. If it is possible, what size DP needles should I use?
They would be very thick, bulky socks. I suppose you could make socks that would be worn on their own without shoes, though they might be slippery for elderly people, though great for those in wheelchairs.
You’d have to use a larger needle or you’d end up with socks that stand up on their own.:teehee:
Yes, of course you can make socks with any size yarn!
And again, Suzeeq is right - the thicker the yarn, the heavier the socks. But if you live in cold-weather areas, or do a lot of cold-weather walking, those kind of socks can be heavenly - especially with the superior feel of hand-made socks. [I used to be a Forest Ranger, and heavy socks were de-rigeur in the icy/snowy wintertimes.]
And of course those thick socks make great slippers. If you’re concerned with slipping [as in on wooden or linoleum floors; rugs make this a non-issue], find a sole to sew on the bottom - leather, rubber, whatever.

I found this but have never tried them…
or maybe something more like a slipper, maybe these: http://knitwits-heaven.tripod.com/pocket_book_slippers.htm
though I didn’t check to see if the guage matches or is even close to Homespun.
lion’s website actually had a pattern for bulky socks knit on size 13s with the wool ease thick and quick, might be able to use that pattern too. i can’t link to it because i lost my lion password again, sorry!
here are some links to lion’s (wool ease thick & quick) per sean’s post
I don’t think you need your p/w to get in…just go into the pattern finder section
ugh, if my links didn’t work, go to www.lionbrand.com and then into pattern finder. you can then go into category (ie sock, slipper), then yarn type (wool ease…homespun didn’t come up with anything)
Hi Kaallen,
Do you have a Ravelry account?
If so, I am Teri61 over there and actually have a pair of socks I made with Homespun yarn pictured on my projects page.
I have the pattern I used on the projects page with the socks too. It’s a very easy pattern to do and they knit up really fast. These socks were for my nephew and they came out kind of like a slipper-style sock.
Hope this helps!
Theresa
I have socks that stand up on their own in the laundry.
