Can one dye fiber fill?

Can one dye fiber fill? I plan on making an online purchase today and would like to know if I should buy some dye for this.

I found some cotton yarn I love, worsted weight and would like to dye it to the colors I need as well. Is there anything I need to know about dying cotton or yarn in general?

What I am still looking for:

Baby weight 100% cotton yarn that is soft… soft.

Worsted weight 100% cotton yarn that is soft… soft, and has lots of color choices. I found CottonTots and love that yarn! But the colors are for… well… tots.

No clue about the fiber fill, but cotton needs fiber reactive dyes, not the same ones you would use for wools and other animal fibers (and no kool-aid either). When I dye cotton, I use the dyes made for t-shirts/tie dying. I think they sell tie-dying kits at Joann’s (and probably other hobby stores), I got mine on eBay.

I find that Dharma Trading has fantastic dyes, for not that much money.

fiber fill like poly-fil for stuffing pillows? or am I not understanding right? Poly-fil is not cotton- its a polymer. (like acrylic) I’m not sure it would be as… fluffy… if you liquid dyed it. If I have the wrong idea, sorry…

curious as to what the dyed fiber-fill is for…

For dying cotton, the most common T-shirt dye I know of is called RIT. It comes in a variety of colors, which can be combined to make other colors. I believe the RIT company makes a few types of dye, but I’m not sure.

I’m knitting a black teddy bear and I want him to be very stuffed. I didn’t want the white showing through. I’m not going to worry about anymore however. I give up so easily.

I’ve seen brown fiber fill online but not locally and thought it would be a good thing to be able to dye it any color I want.

You can use leftover yarn to fill in any parts that have white cluster stuff showing through
I have shredded leftover yarn, and just poked it in holes to cover the white stuffing
I have to do that quite a bit on some of my Goddesses, before I started using REALLY small needles

You could also perhaps use a pair of black tights and fill section of that and stuff into the item.

Susan I love that idea! It will work for so many colors.

 Yes, indeed, the good thing is the range of colours as you say and you can enclose sections of the tights with black thread once sections have been stuffed. Those thick tights are also really…well…thick LOL Nothing really shows through. The feet and a section of the legs are great for the bears own leg insides or arms.
I hope you post a picture of your finished bear on the forum when you’re done. :balloons:

Some lovely new emoticons have been added I notice. Thanks whoever does that work!
