Can I add earflaps on any hat?

I want to add earflaps on this hat. How do I do that? Do I have to make the earflaps rib to match the the hat bottom?

Thanks in advance!

What you could do is make the earflaps first–anyway you want, and leave them on a needle. Then make the ribbing, and when you’re at the point when you’re going to switch to st st, you could knit the stitches from the earflaps together with the stitches on the hat needles and attach them. This way the flaps would come down from under the ribbing.

Or you could make them in ribbing and have them be part of the edge.

Just some thoughts.

Couldn’t one just pick up sts and add the flaps after the fact? :oo:

I have added ear flaps by picking up stitches after the fact. And don’t forget that your ears are closer to the back of your head, so you don’t want the flaps in the dead center.

Thanks ladies ! I love tips like that…makes me feel smarter.
