I am attempting to ‘up level’ my weak knitting skills. I have an ‘easy’ level pattern for mobius scarf that states: K3, *slip 10sts on cn and hold in front, k10, k10 sts from cn. Here is what I did but it did not work out.
K3, slipped 10 counted stitches onto the cable needle and dropped in front of my work, knit the following 10 stitches then picked up the Cn and knit those 10. Big mess.
I watched the video on cable stitches but am still confused. (According to the video only half of the stated stitches are to be stitched? Meaning I would cable 5 vs the 10 stated) when I tried to do as the pattern read, to me, I ended up with a big knot of yearn that had no give to continue knitting.
This really should not be confusing, but to me it is. If anyone can help I would appreciate it so much.
Welcome to Knitting Help!
This can be confusing but if your pattern says explicitly to hold 10sts in front and knit the next 10 sts, then that is what you should do. It may not be easy to see the cable cross perfectly after only a row or so.
Make sure that you knit the sts off the cable needle in the correct direction, The first stitch onto the cable should be the first one knit off the cable needle.
Also, a 10 + 10st cable can be a little difficult to do because of the relatively large number of sts. Commonly cables are 2+2 or 3+3 although they can certainly be more.
What pattern are you using?
I haven’t looked at the pattern but I can confirm what the video stated about how many stitches to knit. I learnt cables this year too so went through the same initial confusion.
The pattern should read something like CB10F, which is the total number of stitches to be worked for the cable, not the number of stitches to go on the cable needle. In this instance, 5 stitches would go on the cable needle and the next 5 would be knitted before knitting the 5 on the cable needle.
If your pattern reads CB20F, then 10 go on the cable needle and you knit the next 10, then knit the 10 from the cable needle, making a total of 20 stitches. Depending on your weight of yarn, 20 stitches total would make for a very big cable but still “doable”. It would really bunch up too, but will even out on the following rows as you don’t cable every single row generally.
It happens that I was testing out a stitch using twenty stitches. I found this cowl, I’m thinking it might be the one you are working on.
Cable Cowl
 Momma, you wanted to challenge yourself and you certainly have. I’ve started just working up the cable.
I’m using a cotton worsted and it has no stretch whatsoever; I would definitely work this in wool. I’m working the C20Back right now. I’ve placed the ten stitches on a cable needle, the working yarn is coming off the right side of the CN and it needs to be in front of the CN to knit the stitches on the left needle.
After knitting the stitches on the left needle, you will knit the stitches on the cable needle. This can be a little tricky, you will need to push the stitches on the CN to the right, when knitting you can use your thumb to make sure that you release the stitch from the needle after it is knitted.
If you are still having trouble, please write back. If this is the cowl, it is beautiful, I really like it a lot.
The first row after the cable stitch will be the most difficult, especially with a twenty stitch cable. I use a Point Protector on the end of the needle holding the stitches to push them close to the tip of the needle.
I do love cables; this was a skill I learned during the first few months of my knitting adventure
After re-reading your post I realized the pattern I found is not the one you are working from. Could you post the name and the pattern and a link to it? That would be very helpful.
ETA - I found this scarf, Sciarpa Mary Infinity Scarf and I believe it may be the one.
That’s way to many stitches to put on a cable needle. I love cables and do them ALL the time and I barely have enough room to knit 6 sts s on the cable needle. YOu can only stretch so far. I’ve never seen a pattern with 10 cable stitches. That’s a lot!
 It can be done. Voila! Twenty stitch cables, DH remarked ‘can tug a boat with that’. Using a dpn for the cables. The Sciarpa Mary Infinity Scarf is knit with three 20-stitch cables in a single row! This one is only one 20 stitch cable.
Just need to weave the ends in.
That’s gorgeous cabling Claire! :woot:
