cable stitch

Greetings:
I have just started my first attempt at making a cable stitch pattern on a 6 mos size baby sweater. The instructions are easy enough to follow but i am getting a gap in the stitches at the beginning and end of the cable .I would appreciate any suggestions on what i may be doing wrong. Many thanks.

Could you post the instructions for the cable itself. It is difficult for us to help unless we know what kind of cable you are making.

There’s going to be a small gap on either side of the cable because you’re knitting these sts out of order and stretching them to do so. Don’t pull the cable sts too tightly when you knit them. This can widen the gap more than usual. I tighten up slightly on the stitch after the cable.
Here are some suggestions for evening up the gap, especially between knit and purl sts.

Hi:
the cable pattern reads: 3/3 RC then 3/3 LC
Thank You

Hi: thank you for the tips. Good to know a small gap is ok and ill try to tighten the stitches on either side of the cable stitch. Ill let you know, and great site for future techtips. Thanks

Hi:
I did it!!! Used your suggestion on tightening the stitches on each side of the cable and it worked.Thank you so much— and what a great tip on going from a knit stitch to a purl. Working on the back of the sweater—will let you know how it all comes out.
