I’m going to make a cable scarf, the cable pattern is from Knitting for Dummies. It’s a 6 stitch left twisting cable. It’s written as CO 14 and blah blah blah.
I want to use the pattern to make a wider scarf. What multiple should I use for my CO number? A multiple of 14?
(It reads:
CO 14
R1: p4, k6, p4
R2: k4, p6, k4
R3: (as row 1)
R4: (as row 2)
R5: P4, sl 3 to cn, hold in front, k3 from LH needle, k3 from cn, p4.
R6: (as row 2)
Being a newbie, not sure of the math. CAN I just double the cast on number? Then work row 1 as p8, k12, p8? And row 5 as P8, sl 6, k6, k6 from cn, p8? Or…?
I plan to do a few rows of garter stitch.
ONE more question:
The pattern reads that you are knitting the purls and purling the knits from row to row, right? Is that making reverse stockinette?
Sorry for the stupid questions. I just want a basic, ONE cable down the middle scarf. No frills.
Thanks in advance!
After you finish the border rows (5-6, however many you want) then start the cable pattern row 1: border 5 stitches, 4p, k6, 4p, k6, 4p, k6, 4p, borer 5 stitches. That’s row 1 of your pattern. the next row is row 2, etc, etc. You do the cable crossing on row 5. the last row of the pattern is row 6. Then you start counting over, row 1, 2, etc.
row 5 would be: P4, (sl 3 to cn, hold in front, k3 from LH needle, k3 from cn) p4, (sl 3 to cn, hold in front, k3 from LH needle, k3 from cn) p4, (sl 3 to cn, hold in front, k3 from LH needle, k3 from cn) p4.
The parts above in the parenthesis (sl 3 to cn, hold in front, k3 from LH needle, k3 from cn) are the 6p from the prior row. This is where you cross the sections making the cable.
Don’t forget to keep 5 stitches in front and at end of each row in whichever border stitch you use. This will keep the scarf from curling.
She just wants one large cable so, yeah increase the number of sts in the k6 part, those are the sts that form the cable. You don’t have to increase the p4 number, those are to the side of the cable, but you could add at least 4 sts to each side of them for a border, either in garter or seed st. So your row could look like this:
1 - border sts, p4, kX (however wide you want your cable) p4, border sts.
2 - border sts, k4, pX, k4, border sts.
Repeat for rows 3 and 4, then on row 5 cross the cable sts.
Experiment with the cable sts as 8, 10, 12; too many of them may not work out well depending on your yarn and needle size.
Oh good point. I always figure to make as many rows between the cables as there are stitches in it. A 6 st cable (3 and 3), 6 rows; a 10 st cable - 10 rows.
Oh, wow, Suzeeq - now that you’ve said it that way, it seems so obvious. I never thought about calculating a cable modification with that formula before. I will have to remember tht one!!
You only do the cable, crossing the sts, only on one row, the other rows are similar to ribbing. Usually you start a cable pattern in the `middle’ between crossovers. So for a 6 st cable, you work 3 rows, cross on the 4th row, then the regular pattern for 5 rows and cross again on the 10th row.
