Cable mystery

Does anyone know how to make fat cables looking like these?
These are currently mock ones. And I just can’t figure out how to make them into the piece as i go along, they’re way too big (app 20 sts per cable). This is the end result I’m looking for but it means a LOT of sewing…

You would make it like you make any cable except with a lot of stitches. It won’t be easy though. I think many stitches crossed will leave larger holes than normal in the crossed area because so much yarn is pulling. Plus trying to knit that many on each cross will be rather hard because it’s a tight knit. It won’t look as neat as your “fake” ones do.

The reason I say all this is because I am making a scarf that is knit very loosely with a mohair blend. It’s got a 10/10 cable and I found it hard to do unless I was knitting extremely loose and lacy. I tried at a normal gauge and it was too difficult.

All you can do is give it a try though on a swatch.

You might have a bit easier time if you use really bulky yarn too. Then you’d have fewer stitches in the cable, but they’d still be really thick. I’m guessing that’s not the look you’re going for though.

There’s no image but here’s a mock cable stitch that can be modified for the number of stitches you want to work with…
