I am knitting the Plymouth Yarns Co P428 sweater in the round and am 11 rounds into the pattern after the stockinette stitch. It is clear to me that the cable portion of the design on my sweater has not been done correctly, but I am not certain why that is. This is not my first time doing cables, but it is the first time I have done it in the round. I have seen videos on how to correct this type of mistake but I am not certain why it’s wrong, so I am hesitant to try to fix it until I have a better understanding. Any help you can offer will, as always, be greatly appreciated. I have attached a picture of my sweater, the sweater as it’s supposed to look and the pattern portion showing the cable pattern.
The area of the problem about 10 stitches to the left of the green stitch marker…

.
Your knitting looks nice and even. Are you knitting 7 rounds between the cable crosses? It’s often difficult to count rows or rounds between cable crosses. You can use thread or stitch makers in the knit column at the side of the cables to mark the cross rounds and make it easier to count.
Here’s a video for cables in case you need it.
Ah. I see my mistake - I misunderstood the instructions. Since I would be starting row 12, I think I can use the “fix the error” technique of isolating the six cable stitches for the 3 incorrect rounds and instead of C6B and C6F for those stitches, simply make them knit stitches using the crochet hook fix method. Do you think that’s feasible?
Yes, I’ve had to do it many times. Actually, it’s good that you caught it early on. The repairs for a missed cable after finishing are much more drastic.
You’ll have to take out all 6 of the cable sts at once.
Here’s a video for one way to work the repair. Yours isn’t as wide as the one in the video. Just make sure to pick up the lowest rung of the ladder as you re-knit.
salmonmac,
once again, you are my hero. While I didn’t come out completely unscathed (one of the cables was pretty twisted and difficult to unravel) I have finished the “fixing round” and am happy with the result. As usual, this was a big learning process and I feel like I have made serious progress in tackling the knitting itself and my apprehension/fear of making mistakes. Seriously, you are a life saver.

Fabulous! Now you have the experience. The sweater is well on its way and looks lovely.
Thank you!!!
I have another question: the instructions for the Yoke back: see above - I am confused about how this works. am I knitting as usual in the round or am I working from the “wrong side” of the work? I have never seen this instruction. If I do this incorrectly, it looks like I will be knitting parts of the fabric together that should not be knit together. I have attached another image of the rest of that part of the instructions…The next set of instructions after that indicate that the Yoke front “with right sides facing” and beginning with a Right side row, work in pattern…am I making this more difficult than it has to be?
I know I am hogging your time and I do appreciate it-
Claudia
At this point, you’re essentially dividing the knitting into halves, a front half and a back half. There are 2 stitches held on safety pins at each side for the underarms.
You’ll be working back and forth (knitting flat) on the back of the sweater and leaving the front to work later. This is done in order to have openings for the arms.
When you say working flat: am I still using the same circular needles the rest of the work is currently on? am I working from the “wrong side”? oh dear.
Yes, you can use the same needles. Instead of knitting around and around, turn as if you were at the end of a row and work on the wrong side row. Then continue to knit on just the back sts, back and forth. The front sts can just hang out on the same needle but they won’t be worked until you finish the back.
So, for example, am I working purl stitches for the stockinette and stockinette for the purl stitches? Is the wrong side of the fabric facing me until I get to the end of the row? I am so sorry, but I am having a hard time wrapping my brain around this and can’t find a You Tube tutorial…
I think I understand and thank you for your patience…
Last question: when doing the cables on the wrong side, do you do the opposite C6F instead of C6B and vice versa?
Um, actually one more: when doing the cables on the wrong side, am I purling them instead of knitting?
sorry, sorry, sorry:(
The cable crosses are all going to be on the right side (the public or outer side) of the knitting. The knit panels will be the right side and the purl panels, the wrong side.
Yes, the 6 stitch cables are purled on the wrong side. For the sts on either side of the cable, when you’re on the wrong side, knit the Vs and purl the bumps.
When you’re knitting across the wrong side, you can peek over the knitting to the right side to make sure the stitch looks correct.
Some day I may be able to thank you enough.
