CA Yarn Stores?

Hi everybody. I’m traveling to the Sacramento/San Francisco area of California on Friday, away from the fires, thankfully, and I was just wondering if these cities hold any great yarn stores. I’m sure they do. So, if anybody can recommend some places I should check out, I’d be ever so grateful.

Thanks in advance. :waving:

If you pm me with exactly what cities you are going to visit and how long, I can give you some tips (possibly) I grew up in Oakland, CA and now live in Chico, CA (90 miles from Sacramento), so I know some of both areas, but it will depend on the specific cities you are visiting.

San Francisco Imagiknit <—Definately suggest this store.

I like Yarns on First in Napa. The store in Walnut Creek is pretty expensive. They are in a high rent area. I can’t think of anywhere else off hand. The other two shops I really liked have closed.

Please see if Filati in Rocklin is on your way. It is easy to find and I think it will be on your way. Excellent shop!!
check out here: http://www.filatiyarn.com/prod.htm. Not only do they carry a huge selection, they have lots of colors in a brand and multiple skeins of each color too. Enjoy.

I think that will be on my way in a side trip. Yay! :yay:

Letah75, I know I’m definitely going to Sacramento, Davis, San Francisco, San Jose, Cambria, and San Simeon. Plus stopping along the way at places on the coast. Thank you SOOOO MUCH for all the suggestions. I’ll keep busy just going to yarn stores! :woot:

Hi. I’m in the Sacramento area. Filatis’ in Rocklin(mentioned above) has TONS of yarn & patterns. Another store I like is Babettas–here is a link for info: http://www.babettasyarnandgifts.com/
There is another store downtown called Rumplestiltskin(I think that’s the name)–I’ve not been there.

I was going to suggest In Sheep’s Clothing in Davis as a Must-Visit and searching for their address, discovered this on their site:

"We have closed our physical retail space. We will be selling all remaining stock at 40% to 80% off through our Internet site.

Check back here for details."

I have no idea when it was posted as there is no date given – it could have been hours or weeks ago! How very sad.

i live just a few miles south of sacramento in elk grove and we have 2 yarn shops here. knitique and the yarn shoppe. both are not EXTRAORDINARY or anything but knitique has a really good supply of cascade 220 and the people at the yarn shoppe are really nice. there is probably a better yarn selection overall at the yarn shoppe. i’ve been to rumpeltiltskin in downtown once…it’s a little on the small side but they had a pretty descent selection also.
i haven’t been to filati but it is definetly on my list of yarn shops to visit if i happen to head out to that area.
there is also a yarn store in west sacramento…can’t think of what it is called though, i’ve never been there.

Wow! I had to check out this thread since I live in the eastern part of Sacramento County – I knew about Filati and Rumpelstiltskin (never been to either one) but wasn’t aware of Babetta’s. Thanks to agnes! This is definitely in my patch!

One shop I liked, which is unfortunately no longer there, was Frog Pond Knits in Citrus Heights. They had a lovely selection of yarn. I think they’re still on the web, though.
Christine

ooooh DEFINITELY Filati in Rocklin!
also:
Purlescence Yarns in Sunnyvale
Commuknity in San Jose
Knitting Arts in Saratoga
Knitting By The Sea in Carmel
Ball and Skein in Cambria

here’s a list of stores that recently participated in a shop hop: http://www.lysshophop.com/shops.html

I had just discovered Frog Pond Knits, then it went out of business a cple mos later :(.

I’m heading to Babettas in a few mins–anyone want to go? :stuck_out_tongue:

I did make it to Filati’s today. They had a really nice selection of yarns, patterns, books, and needles, but at the risk of becoming unpopular, I have to say that the ladies there were not very nice at all. I asked two questions and each time the lady looked at me like I had 6 heads, and my friend overheard one of them almost yelling at a new knitter who had come in to ask a question. It almost made me want to walk back in and return what I bought. I did find a color of Manos that I’ve been looking for, so I guess that’s something at least.

:frowning: oh no. I am so sorry they treated you like that. I recommended them because they have a really good selection. :frowning:

I’m from the San Jose/Saratoga area. My favorites are:
Knitting Arts in Saratoga (a little pricey but a pleasure to shop in)
Yarn Dogs in Los Gatos
The Rug & Yarn Hut in Campbell
The Knitting Room in San Jose off of HWY 87

If you make to Half Moon Bay (south of San Francisco Bay on the coast), there is Fengari.

You’ll probably go through the Monterey area at some point. I love Monarch Knitting & Quilts in Pacific Grove. They have a huge selection and the prices are great.

Wow! I really miss California. :verysad:

I’m finally back from sunny CA, and sadly Filati’s was the only store I had a chance to visit. They really did have a beautiful, wonderful selection, and I got some Noro on sale, as well as a skein of Manos that I’ve been wanting for my afghan. It was such a whirlwind trip, I just didn’t get to do much else except sightsee. Ah, well. That just gives me places to visit next time:wink:
