C5F clarification

Hello fellow knitters,

I have a question regarding C5F.
The pattern says, “sl 3 sts on to cable needle at front, k2, sl p st back on to LH needle and p it, k2 from cable needle”

My pattern states " b2, k2, (p1 C5F) twice, b2 (b2 is my seed stitches that creates the border to my cowl)

I understand all of it, except for “sl p st back onto LH needle and p it”. Where did this purl stitch come from? So am I suppose to somehow bring that purl stitch I created before I cable back to my LH needle?

This explanation is very different from another C5F I found online which says to " Using the cable needle, slip the next 2 stitches onto it and hang in front. Knit the next 3 stitches on the left needle. Then, knit the stitches from the cable needle individually. " I’m assuming these two techniques are very different.

I am a visual learner, and I can’t find videos or photos.

Any clarification would be appreciated!! This purl stitch is really throwing me off!

Hi and welcome to KnittingHelp!
There are several ways to do C5F. Your directions are different from the one that you found online. It’s a split cable with a purl stitch running up the center. For the (p1,C5F): purl 1 (this isn’t part of the cable), then slip the next 3sts to the cable needle (called stitch 1, 2, and 3), k2 and now slip stitch 3 back to the lefthand needle and purl it. It should be a purl stitch from a previous row. Finally, knit stitches 1 and 2 from the cable needle.
Can you provide a link to the pattern or give us the name of the pattern?

There’s a purl stitch in the 3 sts you slip to the cable needle, probably the first one. I bet on other rows you do k2 p2 k4, so this is having you k2, p1, then put the other p and 2 ks on the cable needle, k2 from the left needle, p the p on the cn, then k the other 2 sts. Then repeat that, p1, put a p and 2 Ks on the cn, k2, p1 k2 off the cable needle again.

Thank you so much for your assistance! I’m trying to knit the breckenridge cowl by Melynda Bernardi.

I appreciate your help and explanation  Cheers,
