I’ve worked cables before and have always pulled close the gap after having knitted from the left-hand needle and starting to knit from the cable needle. However, now that my cable is 16 stitches wide, I pulled closed the gap, and I’m not sure that it looks right.
This is the pattern I’m using

Slip 8 stitches onto cable needle and hold to front of work
[k2, p2] twice
[k2, p2] twice from cable needle

Am I doing something wrong? Should I allow a little slack between the left-hand needle stitches and the cable needle stitches?
I don’t know if you’re doing something wrong, but it looks to me like you should knit more, another few inches, to really see what it will look like. JMHO though…
Agree that you need to knit a longer piece to get a better feel for how the plaiting and sts will look. You also appear to be using a yarn that has a boucle appearance and that is making your sts vary in sz/shape so you may not get the crisp definition of the other item you posted.

Yes, the gaps are less noticeable with more length. Washing or blocking when done will even out the stitches a lot, and I don’t think it’s really that bad at all.
Thanks everyone! I did find the below comment on dummies.com, so I may redo this first cable and then keep going.
“When you suspend stitches on the cable needle, let the cable needle dangle down in front of your work, giving the yarn a slight tug to keep it taut (you don’t need to close the gap).”
