Buttons or poppers?

Hi, I’m knitting a baby romper which has buttons for easy nappy change. The pattern gives an option to use poppers instead. Obviously I want something that will be comfortable for the baby who is 6 months old. My question is has anyone used this pattern and found that the buttons are ok. I’ve only ever used tiny chrome poppers in the past for small sewing projects so what do you recommend that will look presentable, easy to use and comfortable for the baby. Many thanks, Colette.

That’s such a cute sailor suit! I think either will work and be comfortable for the baby especially considering the padding of a diaper. I like the idea of poppers or snaps which seem less fiddley to work.

Thanks. I’ll see what poppers are available. I was thinking white or clear

I was thinking the opposite, only because I feel popple tend to pull at poppers which could over stretch the knit fabric, whereas buttons don’t invite pulling.

But really either will be great! Whoever gets this will be joyful!

Thank you. You’ve got a good point there actually and I do think the buttons look nice. The button hole band is one of the last pieces so can decide by then.
Definitely good to have different options though.

I’ve seen ribbons of snaps and I wonder if the re-inforcement of the backing would help prevent strain on the knit fabric.

Poppers = snaps? I think so. I’d vote for poppers. Trying to fasten buttons when changing a squirming baby is challenging. Poppers would be easier. The clothes my babies wore snapped at the crotch. Sometimes the snaps didn’t get fastened because it was just too much bother.

That looks interesting. Really worth considering too. Thank you.

I know what you mean :joy:

Whenever possible a diaper and shirt was what my babies wore. Temperatures indoors and the weather were the deciding factors. I actually preferred pull on pants because I could usually manage to get a squirming baby into them. Just a few snaps as in the photo should be reasonably managed.
