Button band: sewing in place as you go?

Hi Everyone, I completed the back and I am about to start the left front and I am confused as far as how I’m going to finish this as far as sewing in a button band during finishing . Can someone help please explain this to me? Do they mean that as I am knitting the button band? I have a separate piece of yarn with a finishing needle and literally sewing it up as I go? Or perhaps should I try and change the pattern and sew in the button band as I’m knitting the left and right side? Thank you!

Very pretty vest!
You can sew the buttonband and buttonhole band in as you knit (just as you describe with separate needles and a tapestry needle) but it’s probably easier to finish the front panels, attach the back at the shoulders and then knit the bands. Then you won’t have the main needles, the sewing needle and a second set of needles hanging around and in the way.
Because of the difference in row height between the body stockinette sts and a garter stitch band the pattern isn’t written so that the band is part of the front and continuous with it. If you want to work that way with an integral buttonband and buttonhole band you would need to put in a short row on the band where an extra 2 rows are periodically worked on the band.

I would knit the band seperatly but test the length against the finished front (seamed at shoulders to the back as salmonmac said) a few times to get it about right. Then instead of binding off I’d put the band on hold and seam it in (work out how many front rows to how many band rows or garter ridges based on the gauge of each so the band doesnt flip when finished). With the band on hold you can add a few rows or remove a few rows as needed at the back neck to get it central.
Then I’d count the rows or ridges of the button band so I could make the buttonhole band the same number of rows. Also marking on the button band the button placement and counting these rows to knit the holes in the correct positions.
Then id work the button hole band knowing tnis information and seam it on afterwards.
It doesn’t appear to mention but the 2 bands have a little seam at the back neck to join them.

I probably made it sound more complex than it is.
