I’m knitting Brooke Shellflower’s sweetheart baby afghan. My question is why do you start with 150 stitches, then increase 10 stitches to start the hearts then to decrease 10 stitches after you have finished the hearts. Why can’t I just start with 160 stitches???
Welcome to KnittingHelp!
I couldn’t find the Sweetheart Baby afghan but maybe this one is close?
The reason for the change in stitch number is usually in order to keep the blanket even when the stitch pattern changes. Otherwise it might widen and narrow with the different sts. It could be that the hearts narrow the knit fabric so sts are increased to compensate and to fit the repeats of the heart motif.
Thank you so much.
