Brick Stitch issue

For my second project ever, I’m attempting to make a scarf using brick stitch (at least I think that’s what it’s called – little blocks of stockinette and reverse stockinette). I’m having an issue and I’m not sure why it’s happening.

I’m getting a gap between every other block of the pattern. Not every block, just every other block. Then when I go to make the next repeat of the pattern, the gap moves over!

Any idea what I’m talking about? What I’m doing wrong?

It must happen when you either switch from purl to knit or knit to purl, but not both. My only suggestion is to hold the needles as close together and really make sure the yarn is pulled snuggly as you do the first stitch of the block where the gap occurs.

I have this same problem when I’m doing a brick stitch/basketweave pattern. I have found that I stretch the stitches on the needles when I’m going from knit to purl. I have to REALLY concentrate to keep the needles as close as humanly possible.
