Braden's Knitting for a Baby!

Okay, I finally decided to completely forgo the YarnHarlot’s border pattern and use a different one. In this case, the “Zig Zag Edging” from The Knitter’s Bible. It’s simple, but just a bit involved so it’s not boring. Perfect. I’m picky about the lace I knit, and this is great. Here it is:

I think it looks nice with the shawl. What do you think?

I think I’ll stick to what works for me as far as Flikr goes.

That is a beautiful shawl!! Love the edging you chose!

Thanks! My grandma likes it, too. The Flickr group is only active when KH is down, really. But, I always put my photos in the Flickr KH group pool. Don’t really know why.

I use SEVERAL groups in Flickr to organize my photos. That way, it’s easier to find them. Plus, it’s just fun to do it. It comforts my OCD desires. :teehee:

Braden, that knitting is GORGEOUS, as usual. :notworthy:

Thanks!

WOW Braden! You are a very gifted knitter. So sorry to hear about your great grandfather. It’s never easy on those left behind.

It’s not easy. Grandaddy’s visitation was today and his funeral is tomorrow.

You and your family are in my prayers.

Thanks, Sandy, and to everyone else who has left comments about him. It’ll be hard, but we’ll get through it. KH has helped alot, though. He was very popular. You should have seen all the people at his visitation. And there’ll be more at his funeral tomorrow morning. I wish he could have stayed longer, but God does everything for a reason.

Anyway, on to knitting. I’m almost done with the border on the shawl, and then I’ll block it. This will be one project that I’ll actually miss. It is really fun working on it. But, blocking lace is my favorite part of a lace project, really. Transforming a ratty, puckery object into flat, graceful, open lace is really very fun. Once it’s blocked it should be about 6.5 feet across the top, and 3.5 to 4 feet long. And, it’s a bit heftier than it would be if I had used the laceweight called for, instead of the fingering weight I am using.

Speaking of blocking lace, how do you do it? I am a very dedicated to soaking my lace in warm water with a mild woolwash for 15-30 minutes, and then using pins and blocking wires. I’ve heard of some people pinning it out and using a spray bottle, but I really don’t think that works as well.

I’ve never really blocked anything except small items, so I’m not experienced at all. I want to come and watch you block, so I can learn!

:hug:Braden, I’m so sorry to read of your grandfather’s passing. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Braden,
I’ve never knitted something that needed to be blocked. Good luck and I can’t wait to see pictures of it when you get it done. You are my inspiration.

Here are the steps I follow for blocking lace, in order.

1.) Soak knitting in lukewarm water and mild woolwash or dish soap (DAWN) for 15-20 minutes. If you used dish soap, rinse it out.

2.) Press out excess water very carefully, between 2 towels.

3.) Thread blocking wires through all straight edges, and pin out. If you don’t have blocking wires. just pin out the points. Block in wires help keep the edges straight, and don’t leave the telltale scallops of pins.

4.) WAIT UNTIL COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE REMOVING! This is very imortant. The blocking wont’ set very well if it’s still damp.

5.) Wear proudly!

Here’s the Snowdrop, for what it’s worth. I haven’t done much knitting on it lately, what with grandfather’s funeral and all, but here it is. I’ve done about 5 more inches of edging, but still have a long way to go.

My thoughts are with you and your family. I’m so sorry for you’re loss. I just started reading your blog. You are sooo mature for your age!!

Wow that beautiful. I love that color. what yarn are you using?

Gorgeous! :inlove:

Thanks, guys! The wool is KnitPicks Palette fingering weight, in colorway Rainforest Heather. It makes a nice, soft, lofty shawl, with just a slight halo.

Braden,

I’ve been away from KH for a few days. I’m sorry to hear about your great grandpa.

On a lighter note, I love your shawl! Who will it be for? I liked your survey and pasted my answers on my blog.

Thanks! The shawl is for my grandmother.

Sorry for your loss Braden

:inlove: Snowdrop is gorgeous!
