I’ve gotten this desire to knit a sweater with bobbles. I found a pattern on etsy, ladies easy fit Aran bobble stitch cardigan. But it’s labeled as vintage and from discussions here my take away is that these can be hard to follow. Do I have this correct
Bobble sweater pattern
I do think they are pretty hard to follow but likely not impossible. Don’t forget we can all chip in to help out. If you like the style then perhaps just go for it.
I’m going to also add that “vintage” can mean a lot of things, there are some patterns listed as vintage and retro which are from the 80s which to me is not vintage, it’s about 5 minutes ago. I don’t find those patterns all that hard to follow (in my limited experience) whereas patterns from the 40s or 50s I find trickier in the wording, I’ve read several and helped with a couple but not followed any myself . I am cautious of sizes in vintage patterns, often much much smaller than a contemporary fit. So perhaps check out the size carefully before buying.
And the 80s patterns are frequently oversized compared to modern fashion expectations.
Do you like making bobbles? There’s a bunch of them. The pattern itself looks pretty basic so shouldn’t be terribly difficult. And as Creations points out, as vintage goes, from the 80s isn’t that old.
I wonder if the seller has rights to the pattern to legally sell it.

A yarn listed in one photo seems to be a Sirdar yarn. I didn’t check others. If it’s a Sirdar pattern chances are you’d be buying from someone selling a pattern they have no rights to.

If it was a free pattern it might be found via the Wayback Machine. I don’t know how to do that. I’d be leery of buying it myself.
I’ve never done anything with bobbles. I just thought it looked “cool”. So I went in search of a sweater pattern. I have some cotton yarn I thought I’d use for something else that would be perfect. I didn’t realize there was something to be leery of, ordering off Etsy. Hmmm
If you’ve never done bobbles at all you might want to check out some tutorials and give them a try. I’m not sure how cotton yarn will work for making bobbles since it can be hard to work with. I’ve done knitted bobbles just to try them out but personally don’t care for them so beyond testing a technique or two I don’t know much about doing them. For me bobbles, knit or crochet, catch on everything and look ratty fast. salmonmac is our font of all knowledge knitting and she can help you out.
Yes, I see a crochet blanket on that Etsy page that I know for a fact is from Leisure Arts, because I have that book! Same exact photo. It’s one thing to sell vintage books and magazines, but she lists herself as “Designed by”. Highly suspect. It’s probably out of print so OK to sell, but why claim it’s your design?
I’m sure you could find a pattern for bobbles online, and make yourself a swatch to see how you feel about making them, before embarking on a whole sweater. I find some techniques to be not worth the trouble, but your mileage may vary.
Scan once, sell many times. Nice little profit. Claiming the design as ‘mine’ is disgusting.
@GrumpyGramma good detective work on the pattern and brand.
Here’s the sweater version straight from sirdar

Not found the cardigan (yet) though (and possibly won’t)
@KnittinGigi it’s common on etsy, I’ve seen free patterns being sold there too.
You could perhaps contact sirdar for the pattern?
I think it’s a good idea to try out a swatch of bobbles first to see if you like them.
Got it

From the Sirdar patern page “Like all of our designs, Heritage Collection patterns are copyright protected.”
Wow you guys are quite the detectives. I think I will try the suggestion of a swatch with bobbles first to see what I think. Good points. Thanks
You found it. You found both of them. I tried but didn’t come up with anything. I don’t trust pattern sales on etsy and the lack of the cover with name of the pattern and who published it seemed not right. When it comes to patterns on etsy I’m just suspicious. IMHO patterns that old should be offered as free downloads by the publisher.
