Blue Blanket for a Baby?

So, I just ordered the Nursery Knits book by Zoe Mellor and I’m REALLY excited to knit the Starlight Blanket (Rav link) first, but my mother was saying that with the unknown sex of the child to be (only two months in) that I shouldn’t do it because if she had a girl, she wouldn’t want a blue blanket on her.

Myself, I think it’s a blue blanket because it’s a picture. NOT because it’s meant to be a “boy” item.

What do you guys think? Would you mind this blanket on your little girl?

(For those not on Ravelry, it’s a blue blanket with a moon and stars on it, so it’s a night sky.)

It’s supposed to look like the night sky with the moon and stars…to me, that’s unisex. We all see the same sky no matter what sex we are. I think it would be just fine for either a baby boy or baby girl…it’s just a really pretty blankey. I’d knit it on up, it I were you.

Well, with the moon and the stars on it, it’s obviously a “picture” of the evening sky and not, IMHO, meant specifically for a boy.

Go ahead and make the blanket - it’s a beautiful pattern!

I don’t think specific colors for boy or girl matter so much anymore. Except maybe pink for boys…
It looks like a dark blue, that’s really not ‘baby boy blue’ so go for it.

I say go for it. The only reason I would say not to do it is if the CHILD’S mother (not your mom!) said they wouldn’t use it.

I’d say if this is her 3rd or more child- it also may not matter. :teehee: I dressed my son in a pink sleeper @ home sometimes. It really clashed with his red hair. Babies don’t care what color things are.

That blanket is blue like the sky, and I don’t care if you tape a bow to a girls head, people will still call her a boy anyway!

It’s her first child, so I’m not sure if she’s going to do that sex-color thing or not. I figure I’ll casually slip it into conversation at work. She’s only two months in and doesn’t know the sex of the baby anyway.

My father’s thought on it was that if she was having a girl, a lighter blue and a darker blue for a boy. I personally wouldn’t care, but if my mother thought that, being a mother, it’s what made me wonder about whether another mother might feel that way.

It’s a beautiful pattern, and the moon and stars are in a blue sky. I say go for it, it’s a gift from the heart and will appreciated. I know I would have loved to received a blanket like that.

It would depend on the age of the mother. Younger ones likely wouldn’t care, older ones (g-mother or gg-mother age) might.

Yeah, she’s definitely in the “younger mother” category.

Hopefully, she’s in work tonight so that I can mention that I was asking my mother.
