Blocking a sweater question

And yet another dumb question from me.

Once again I’ve read contradictory advice in various books / websites - this time regarding blocking.

I’m working on my first sweater now. Should I block the individual pieces and then seam them together, or seam them together and then block the whole thing? :??

I think there are contradictory articles because there is more than one way to do it.

Some people like the pieces to be flat for seaming.

Some people like to sew the pieces together first and block the whole thing.

I’m of the latter group–I think because the first sweaters I blocked were knitted in one piece to start with. With pieced sweaters, I’m also afraid that I won’t get the pieces the same size and they won’t match up properly.

So it really is a personal preference, depending on the thickness of the sweater and how much space you have to lay out the pieces.

I haven’t knit a sweater in pieces but I think if I did - I would put it together and then block it - for the reasons that Ingrid said and just because Ingrid said so! :teehee:

Thanks! :muah:

I think I’m going to get all the pieces knit up first and then decide. If they seem to fit together well, I will seam them and then block the whole thing. This is what I would prefer to do. But if I have the creeping suspicion that the sleeves won’t fit into the armholes I might block first then seam.

I’ve finished the back and am almost done with the front (I’m about to start the neckline). So far it looks very good…for a simple first sweater anyway! :cheering:
