Blech- terrible cough

I have the worst cough today (I’m coughing as I’m writing these very words!).
I have my cough drops, and knitting projects #1 and 2, so I’m all set. :roflhard:
Also, I got a special bonus: sniffles!!! Yipee…
Oh, well.

I’m feeling for you!! :frowning: I promise I’m not crazy…but a bunch of ladies I know suggested I try equal parts of vinegar and honey. I added the hold your nose until it gets all the way down part. It worked for me, and almost everyone I know that had the cough!! Give it a whirl, what have you got to lose (other than the cough!)

Im right there with you Nicoleheather. I had a horrible migraine last night and it must of done me in. I woke this morning with a head cold and fever. Alas the fever cleared and I had to work anyway.
But tomarrow is yet another trial as I have to drag my aching, whiney self to a 6:30 am meeting. Now I ask you what kind of employer drags emploees out of a cozy bed for a 2 hour meeting at 6:30 am on a SUNDAY???

Thanks guys! Guess what? Today I woke up and I’m feeling even worse. I really really hope that I feel better tomorrow.
Thanks for the advice, Kellyjo32, on the (gulp) honey and vinegar. I think I’ll try that a little later, if I can get my nerve up…
SIX-THIRTY AM MEETING??? On a SUNDAY???
You’re right, Quirky. What kind of manager pulls people out of a nice, cozy bed on a Sunday morning? :?? Well, I hope you feel better.
Oh, btw, Kellyjo, would I use about a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of vinegar?
Thanks, guys!

Also, drink lots of water. Benadryl is a miracle drug, if you don’t have to be awake. And make sure you keep moving those lungs. If you’re not in perfect health BEFORE a creeping crud cough, then it can quickly turn into pneumonia if you don’t breathe deeply and keep the crud moving. Lots of water.

My girlfriend recommends a hot toddy for clearing up a cold. Hot tea, lemon, honey, and a little medicinal whiskey. If you’re legal and don’t mind whiskey, of course, It’s not the tastiest thing in the world, but it works.

I’ve had the cough since last week… pretty sure mine is from my allergies/sinus though but its annoying me to no end lol esp. when I lay down to sleep and start coughing so gotta get up before I wake everyone lol hope you feel better soon!!! We also have a humidifer running to see if that will help…

There’s a tea called Throat Coat by Traditional Medicinals that is wonderful, especially for irritation from sinus drainage, it’s a staple in our house. It tastes pretty good too! Hoep everyone feels better soon!

My family has “it” too whatever “it” is…cold or flu. My dh is sitting right now with a cup of hot tea and he NEVER drinks tea!!! Plus he has the chills and he is NEVER cold. Now I have the chills often anyway but when I ask for hot tea…I’m sick too!! So we both are coughing and sneezing but at least I can keep on knitting.

Then my daughter and her husband and their 3 yr. old also have it and so does my mom and they are not living near each other at all!! So something is going around!

Oh, my obligatory nursing post: everyone wash your hands! All the time. Wash your hands obsessively and carry around that purell stuff (they make keychain ones) and sneeze into your elbow and encourage strangers to do the same. Everything you touch has germs on it, even (gasp!) your yarn. Because most yarn is porous and has natural fibers in it, it’s more likely to hold onto germs, too. So wash those hands!

</nursing post>

I’ve been hit with the allergies, thanks to the 70 and 80 degree temps here lately, so I’m definitely going to have to try that sneeze into your elbow thing!
Nicoleheather - I think I did about a teaspoon and a half of each, not sure though, whatever filled that little cup. DH did it for me. I hope you guys are all feeling better soon!! DH and I both had regular head colds, and then got hit with the fever, chills, body aches for a week or two, and then the cold just hung in there…not fun! I’m feeling for everyone! Feel better soon!!

I think the new viruses are just more resistant to going away, probably from all the overuse of antibiotics. Add to that very weird weather (in OH, it was 60 degrees yesterday and is supposed to be 30 tonight), and I don’t think the molds outside were killed off like they normally are.

I know I am going into week 4 of this. My son had it for almost 2 months…it had just started to clear up and then his girlfriend got sick, so now he is getting it again. My cough is still just awful. I don’t know whether its better to try to bring up the hairballs or not.

Yep Purell is sure a big help!

Not to start a debate by any means, but they say that the anti-bacterial products, such as Purell, and all of the anti-bacterial soaps, cause the bacteria to become more resistant as well. Antibiotics shouldn’t be used to treat viruses, only bacteria. And things like this flu bug that is going around is a virus. I know my doctor will not prescribe an antibiotic if you’ve taken one within a certain time frame, but they are all different, and you’re right, antibiotics have become overused to a certain extent. I know I was on two for this last round of sickness I had, but my doc started me on a very low-dose one, to see if it would work before giving me a stronger one. I guess that is a way to combat becoming resistant as well.

FYI, Purell isn’t an antibiotic, it’s an alcohol friction rub. It kills all germs, not just bacteria, with friction.

Proper handwashing, with regular soap, also can halt the spread of disease. It doesn’t have to be antibacterial to do so.

And yes, we have resistant bacteria, but that’s mostly due to the overuse of antibiotics (people go to the doctor and get a prescription for penicillin to treat a cold, even when there’s no bacteria causing the cold) and the misuse of antibiotics (people not finishing their prescriptions when they feel better), and the over-sterilization of homes (lysol overuse, etc) as opposed to handwashing. You don’t have to carry a bottle of lysol around with you, just wash your hands before and after you eat, after you use the bathroom, and after using public surfaces (doorknobs in restaurants, community computers). I’m disgusted when I see people sneeze on their hand and then go to touch something with it, like a public telephone or a doorknob.

Here’s more information about handwashing and antibiotic resistant bacteria:

Now, go wash your hands!

I am with you on the handwashing, just wash those little germs down the sink!! The only problem is the dry skin it can cause, which leads to the potential for an increase of bacteria…so use moisturizing soap!!
I got some clarification on the products I was thinking about…Purell is not one of them (since it is alcohol based) but do beware of anti-bacterial products that contain “triclosan”, which many do, because this is a form of an antibiotic, and can cause resistance to bacteria. The Purell type products can cause concern if they do not contain emollients, such as aloe for moisturizing. The drying effect of the alcohol can lead to dry skin, which can create a situation where more bacteria can develop (just like washing your hands with soap can if you are not careful!)
