OK, I am making the sweater that I had questions about days ago (place markers & stitch holders). I completely understand about both of those things now, so thank you. But… here is my next question -
I binded off one sleeve but… do I cut the yarn at this point? How do I start working on the other sleeve (and the front and back, for that matter)? I have the other sleeve stitches on a stitch holder, but then I have no yarn to join it too. I haven’t cut the yarn yet. I still have my last stitch of the sleeve on my right needle.
You can cut the yarn if you’re sure the sleeves will be the right size and shape. Of course, I’m always tinkering with everything, so I usually start the next piece with another skein or the other end of the one the first sleeve is on, and don’t cut anything until I absolutely have to, or am satisfied with all the pieces.
Thank you. I will see what I want to do. But, if I cut the yarn, how do I start with a new piece for the other sleeve? There is nothing to join it to. Can I just make a slip knot and then weave in the ends after?
If the sleeves are knit seperately, you either have to start with a completely new ball of yarn and cast on and work as you did the first sleeve, or if you don’t have a new ball of yarn you will have to cut the yarn from the first sleeve, leaving a good length tail for weaving in later (I’d say leave at least 6") and start the second sleeve from that.
What knitqueen said, though I will add - when you get to the end of the RS row, don’t turn the needle around, just begin knitting the stitches on the left needle. Tug your first few stitches after joining a bit so there’s not a gap where you joined.
