Best yarns for soft, washable baby blanket?

Does anyone have recommendations for a good yarn to use for a knit baby blanket? I want something very soft and cuddly, but also washable and machine dryable. Thanks!

I’ve used Caron Simply Soft for baby blankets, and Bernat Softee Baby (I think that’s the name), too. Both fit your requirements.

I like the Bernat brand. Haven’t tried Simply Soft. Most of the baby yarn at the stores like Joanns are nice to touch.

Do you have a specific pattern in mind? The reason I ask is that some yarns that are textured like boucle are soft and cuddly, but don’t show pattern stitches well so it’s best of they are garter type patterns.

Caron Simply Soft (various types and colors)
Red Heart SOFT
Bernat - Softee Baby/chunky, Baby/Jr Jacquards, Satin

I crocheted a baby blanket with Red Heart Baby Teri and it turned out really soft. I washed it before giving it to my niece and it washed up well, too.

Knit Picks Crayon (that’s one of those boucle yarns Jan was talking about), it’s soooo soft. Patons Astra. I Love This Sport, though they don’t have many colors available online which is the only place I can get it. Berroco Comfort DK. Lots of colors and it’s on sale! :woot:

I’ve used the Bernat Softee baby for a crochet baby blanket and it was soft and washed well, in case you need more thoughts on this!

My favorite for making baby items is Cotton Ease by Lion Brand. I have a two year old and newborn and have made blankets, sweaters and toys for each using the Cotton Ease. I have several items that are two years old and have been washed a lot and still look brand new! It’s the best, very soft and comfortable.

Excellent! Most of the brands recommended are available locally either at Michaels or Joann’s, so I won’t have to order anything. Looks like a trip to the store to touch some yarns! Thanks!
