Best way to sew sweater pieces together

This seems like an extremely friendly sight, so I’m excited to start browsing all the threads. But right now I need a bit of help. I’m returning to knitting after a long absence and have had to reteach myself a lot of “techniques” I knitted a very nice sweater that has 5 pieces…back, 2 fronts and 2 sleeves. What is the best way to put them together and if you have a video link…even better. I’ve done a 3 needle bind off for a shoulder seam on a different sweater, but remember using a different method in the past so connect side seams etc…

Thanks in advance and I’m really glad I happened on this site :knitting:

Did you look thru the vids? Check out ‘Knitting Tips>Finishing>Seaming’ at the top of this forum. Assuming you did a proper selvage st, mattress stitch is most likely your best option.

Even without a selvedge, mattress stitch is the best–I love the seam it produces.

3needle bind off for the shoulders is a great technique, too, but you need live stitches at the shoulders in order to do it.

Sew the shoulders, then put on the sleeves, then seam up the sides and sleeve seams, from the bottom up, so any glitches will end up in the armpit.:shifty:

I use a crochet seam. I always try mattress stitch, but it always ends up being too loose for me. Crocheting makes a bit thicker seamline, bu it looks wonderful (to me) from the outside. You just slipstitch the peices together with a crochet hook about the same size you used for your main body pieces. If you prefer, you can use a yarn the same color, but slightly thinner to produce a seamline that isn’t as thick.
