I’m busy knitting some Lacy Fingertip Towels for Christmas gifts, however recently someone here posted a link to a Double Bump pattern for dish cloths or scarfs. (Whoever it was, I say thank you!) Last week I bought a skein of Sugar 'n Cream at Michael’s and knit up my first cloth. Love the pattern and the yarn worked out great. Now here’s my question: IS 100% cotton my best choice for these cloths? A blend better? I want them to be “used and abused”; no special treatment required.:woot: Also several of my friends and family have earth-tone kitchens…granite counter tops and such. Therefore I’d like to knit these cloths in neutral shades. I haven’t really seen much of this, (in 100% cotton or a cotton blend), in my Michael’s or Hobby Lobby. Maybe I’ll have to do some online shopping, but would truly also appreciate some recommendations for that too. (It would be my very first internet shopping since I’m still pretty new at this computer stuff:teehee)!
My Sugar 'n Cream dishclothes have held up very well. That cotton is sturdy. The only one I’ve had that died is this one 
The slip stitches that create the brick-like pattern wore out over time.
Sugar n Cream is considered the best for dishcloths, though RH, Lion and Bernat also make a cotton yarn that may have the colors you’re looking for. SnC comes in an offwhite/tan/cream color and a couple of brown/tan/cream multis and other earth tones. You might find more selection at Joanns, Hobby Lobby and Walmart now carries it.

The Bernat Handicrafter Cotton in White is what I use for dishclothes. Its super easy to clean and can be bleached if need be. I use a very simple pattern too.
I have been knitting forever and for dishcloths/facecloths I really like to use Peaches and Cream (Creme). I order it on-line, the delivery is quick and the yarn colors are extensive. I travel much, so always have to take yarn with me and dish/face cloths are easy to knit on the go. Enjoy!
Once again, thanks for the tips! That’s good to know about the bleaching. Who knows what messes we might get our dish cloths into:cry: ! I guess that, (bleaching), would pertain to pretty much any of these 100% cotton yarns? (A color safe bleach for the colors).
I make these often, and use them daily, as well as give them for gifts. Everyone needs a fresh new dishcloth now and then!
I always use 100% cotton, no matter what brand.
A friend once gave me one made of acrylic yarn, and I found that it didn’t hold the water well, just slipped over the dishes…did not like it at all. It also stretched to a large size when wet.
I once found some lovely Egyptian cottons, which felt more silky, but after knitting these up, ( in various patterns) I gave then to friends as ‘facecloths’ rather than dishcloths…cuz they were more expensive and I dreaded thinking of them with food bits stuck in.
I haven’t tryed bleaching the clothes yet I’m happy to see my white dishclothes that I’ve knitted ugly and stained like a dishcloth should be LoL. I love the 100% cotton cloths, they clean pots baked on stuff and I even use them to clean our indoor electric grill. All around one of the best projects I’ve worked on.
This xmas I’m give some away all in white so I don’t have to worry about matching decors, and it was cheaper to buy a huge pile white cotton yarn and just knit up some dishcloths and call it done for the extened family.

I’m coming along pretty good with the cloths. Not pushing it yet, but it might come to that as Christmas draws closer. Have 8 finished now and really have become hooked on this pattern. It turns out perfectly square and lays flat…the pattern is equally attractive on either side too. So far I haven’t had to do any online shopping for yarn, but I sure appreciate the links to where I can find other colors and brands. I’ve found several neutral/natural colors, (Sugar and Creme), at my nearby Michael’s. Discovered immediately that the solid color skeins have more yardage, (120 yds) compared to the mult-colored ones, (95 yds). At least that’s all they carry at my store.
I’ve been experimenting with sizes. Started with casting on 37 stitches as the pattern called for. It’s a nice size, but personally I like a slightly smaller cloth. I have small hands…(small arthritic hands).:sad: Now I’ve been knitting some by casting on 34 stitches, (the pattern is multiples of 3 +1),and instead of doing a TOTAL of 13 repeats of the pattern sequence, I do 12. I’m using size 6 needles and they’re still turning out square!:cheering: The cool thing in doing this size is that there is just the perfect amount of yarn on the multi-colored skeins to get two cloths! :woot: The plan is to give them in sets of 4 cloths. I’ve been rolling each one up and tying with a piece of hemp or twine to hold the roll together. I wanted to post the link in case someone might be interested in this “Double Bump” patterns. I really like Reynold’s “Saucy” mercerized cotton. It also comes out of the washer/dryer really nice!

I use the Saucy “worsted” for dishcloths and hand towels.
I used the Saucy “sport” for a fingertip towels this past Spring.
Either one is very nice. Either one would work for dishcloths.
But you [I]work less[/I] stitches with the worsted weight! I’m all about quick n’ easy.
