I was just looking on ebay at yarn and came across a bunch of folks selling this. Has anyone tried it? I’ve never seen it. Only their cottontots which seems pretty soft. Would the handcrafter be ok for a baby blanket or is it too harsh? Thanks!
Bernat Handcrafter Cotton...anyone tried this?
It’s not harsh by any means, but it’s not super duper soft, either. I have it, but haven’t used it yet. I’d say it’s more along the lines of Sugar and Cream cotton, but a little softer. I believe it gets softer with washing and wear, though.
This is the cotton yarn I use almost exclusively. It’s not a super soft cotton, but it’s not rough either. It’s not mercerized, and it’s not strongly twisted; meaning that it doesn’t have a sheen, and it does split a bit {but not enough to be frustrating}. It washes well, and does get softer after washing. You need to be careful when washing really bright colours, as hot water tends to make some of the colours bleed and/or go muddy after many washings. Since I use it mainly for dishcloths and such, the hot water does a job on some of the colours, but not others.
Any wearables that I’ve made with it, I washed in warm/cold water, and then machine dried until just damp, and then laid flat until completely dry. Written out, my washing directions sound more difficult than they really are. I just make sure that I’m not using the hot cycle when washing, and then throw it in the dryer with the rest of the load. When the dryer cycle is done, even if everything else is dry, the cotton garment is usually still damp. I just shake it a bit to get any huge wrinkles out, and then spread it out on my sweater dryer which is right beside my dryer.
