Bergere Pattern 286.57 Ladies Poncho

I wouldn’t say I was an inexperienced knitter - 50+ years & tackle Aran, Shetland, Intarsia etc but I just cannot get my head around reading this pattern. It looks so straightforward & I’m at a loss to know why I can’t follow it. Has anyone else had this problem, got any solutions/tips? I feel rather pathetic at reaching out for help but now I’ve invested in the yarn it’s going to be an expensive mistake that I can ill afford if I don’t make the garment!
Really would appreciate advice:)

Hello and Welcome to KH! What part of the pattern 396 - Poncho are you having difficulty with? Is this the project you are working on? Is it the construction of the garment or particular row instructions?

BTW, if this is the pattern, it is absolutely lovely :inlove: I am such a fan of Aran, cables, etc.

Hi and welcome to KH!
This pattern has caused some problems in the past so you’re not alone. It is a little unusual but you’ve come to the right place to ask questions.

I am needing help with this pattern as well. I am taking the time to write out a detailed pattern and I am looking at the main pattern where it says “When work measures 2 1/4 inches…”. This is at approximately row 14 which should be approximately Cable row 10. I assume I continue to work cable as per the right row while decreasing as instructed with the pattern? I wish Bergere would write out the full pattern … very confusing this way.

This is such a pretty pattern but it does have some problems.

Here’s a link to the errata online that might help.

Yes, continue the cable pattern and cable crosses as you do the decreases. If I remember correctly, the dec all happen between the cables.
