Bell sleeves on sweater

Ok, so I’m feeling ambitious and brave and I’m taking a Knitting Pure and Simple v-neck sweater pattern and I’m adapting it to fit my tastes. I’m into the free-flowingness of a bell sleeve right now and, in premise, it seems simple enough: increase evenly until you get the billowy effect you want, right? I’m thinking of following the basic pattern up to about the elbow, then working my increases until I get that nice bell.

So, question: anyone know how many increases/rows it would take to make your standard average bell? I’m not talking anything wonky large like those from the 70s; I just want a modest bell sleeve like this: http://www.knitpowerstopeace.blogspot.com/

Also, just in case my ambition falls flat on its arse, does anyone know of a free pattern that actually shows me how to make bell sleeves?

Thanks, guys!

This pattern has really slight bell sleeves, not as much flare as the ones in the blog you linked, but of course it’s a pattern so it gives you an idea of how many rows to increase/decrease (depends if you’re working top down, or bottom up).

I’m working top down in the round and this pattern looks great! I think with a little modification, this was just the guidance I needed. Thanks so much, knitqueen! :cheering:

You’re most welcome!
