Hello!
I just picked up some needles yesterday, I remember the basics my grandmother taught me as a little girl but it’s been a while!
I was inspired by a local animal charity who need knitted pouches for orphan wallabies
so I need to get practicing!
Now the pouches don’t need patterns, but I’m just trying a little project to improve my skills. I would just like to knit a little black square with a white skull pattern but I’m not sure how to change colours or read the chart… I’m hopeless!
If anyone could give me some tips I’d be most grateful
Hi, welcome to KH and welcome back to knitting!
There are some directions here, about halfway down the page for intarsia (good for large color blocks) or fair isle (better for smaller areas of color change).
Usually color pattern charts are read right to left on row 1 and then left to right on row 2, where each block represents a color and a stitch. Your chart may have every row charted or every other so you’ll need to check out the row numbers that run up the side. The beginning half of this video may help.
Can you give us a link to the chart?
Hello thank you so much for replying
Here’s a link to the charts, I think the one on the right might be better for me to start with! Thanks for the video link, gonna have a little try now.
OK, that looks good. Best thing is to go ahead and do just what you suggested, give it a try. If you run into problems or have questions, let us know. We’d love to see a photo of the finished pouch (with or witthout wallaby) if you’d like to post one.
Really appreciate your help
I did this last night, just wanted to practice changing colours before I started attempting the patterns for the wallabies pouches, I think I’ll do something much cuter for their patterns though

I’ve never done anything like this before!! Got a lot of practicing to do.
Wow, first time and it looks great!
You have a good, even tension without puckering. Very nice.
