# Beginner needs help with reading a pattern

I’m trying to follow a pattern and was doing well til I got to the instruction that said, “Dec in this way at each end of 2 foll 4th rows and next 2 RS rows. 4 sts.” Can anyone interpret this for me?

If I’m reading it correctly I think it says the followign:

Presuming the following row is row 1:
Work the described decrease (I assume there is a description of a decrease before this) in at the beginning and end of the 4th and 8th rows. (I get this from “at each end of 2 following 4th rows”)
Then work it every other row when the right side faces you. (“and next 2 rs rows”) So, if you start with a wrong side row:

Row 1: Work normally
Row 2: Work normally
Row 3: Work normally
Row 4: Work Decreases at each end
Row 5: Work normally
Row 6: Work normally
Row 7: Work normally
Row 8: Work Decreases at each end
Row 9: (which is a WS row) Work normally
Row 10: Work Decreases at each end
Row 11: Work normally
Row 12: Work Decreases at each end

If you started with a RS Row, you will need one fewer rows to get the decreases in the right place:

Row 1: Work normally
Row 2: Work normally
Row 3: Work normally
Row 4: Work Decreases at each end
Row 5: Work normally
Row 6: Work normally
Row 7: Work normally
Row 8: Work Decreases at each end
Row 9: (which is a RS row) Work Decreases at each end
Row 10: Work normally
Row 11: Work Decreases at each end

That’s my best guess without being able to see the pattern

Thanks Marnie! That’s what I was thinking, but I’m just starting out(4th project - a teddy for my nephew) and it was confusing. I’m going to give it a try as you suggest.
