Beginner can’t work out where rib stitch is going wrong

I am working on a Wool and the Gang pattern and I have 101 stitches. I’ve done 6 rows of rib stitch without any problems but am now having trouble with slipping in to seed stitch. My pattern says when knitting on the wrong side start with a Purl and then go k, p, k, p etc. and then done the opposite for the next row - start with knit and then alternate. this was working fine until my last three rows. I have already made this mistake and frogged once and now I can’t workout where I am going wrong or how to stop making this mistake.

Welcome to KH! I suspect you did an accidental increase or decrease on the row before it turned into seed stitch. With that many stitches placing a marker every 20 stitches (or other number you like that works with your pattern repeat, in this case 2) can make counting the long row easier. You just make sure you have the correct number between stitch markers and if it’s off one either way you can know the mistake is in that section. This is an excellent opportunity to learn to “read your knitting” too. You want to “knit the knits and purl the purls” for ribbing. All that means is that if it looks like a knit you knit it and if it looks like a purl you purl it. I found a picture that might help you ID which is which.

GrumpyGramma’s suggestion is excellent!
You don’t necessarily need an even stitch count as long as you’re keeping an eye on what you’re doing, but having an even number of stitches does make it easier to do rib without thinking too hard lol (naturally, you’d purl the knit stitches and knit the purls to get seed stitch).

I’ve got a question about your question!!! Which stitch do u want to do? Do u want to stay with the ribbing or are u asking how to switch from ribbing to seed stitch?

Thanks
Knitcindy

thanks so much for all your help! I was trying to stay with the ribbing but I was ending up with seed stitch instead. I’ve gone back a couple of rows and tried again making sure to keep track of where I’m at and knit the knits and purl the purls!

Wonderful! You turned a mistake into a learning experience. Thanks for letting us know.

That’s a good question. I assumed the rib was to continue. I wish I had picked up on that like you did because the intent could have been to change to seed stitch.

That’s ok. After I posted my question I thought everyone would think I was crazy or something. I’m just glad our friend got it figured out!!!

I recall one of Roxanne Richardson’s videos where she talked about what someone was actually asking about. She explained why the question was so ambiguous. You could have been right and clarification would have followed. If you’re crazy I consider you excellent company. I know I am. lol I have to be to knit without patterns.

my wording was a bit ambiguous so it makes sense about the confusion. I think everyone should have a bit of crazy, life’s boring without it.
