Beanie with ear flaps

Hi All

My next knitting project is to be a beanie with ear flaps for my almost one year old, I thought that I had found one on line, however I am stuck at the first hurdle and I am hoping someone will be able to help me and explain some of the instructions to me in very basic language…

It states that it is suitable for beginners, but maybe I am too much of a beginner??

My first question is what does CO1 mean? I would have thought it meant “cast on one” but is that possible???

Second question is what “knit into stitch” means, I have found what “knit into stitch below” means, but is she refering to the same thing?

Maybe I am not up to this type of knitting yet so I should just give it a miss.

Any words of wisdom would be much appreciated :thumbsup:

CO1 is indeed cast on one. You can do a slip knot to get that one stitch on the needle. This is the beginning of one of the two earflaps. The next steps increase the sts by knit, purl, knit into that one st (knit into the st just means knit that stitch). In the case of kpk into the stitch, you insert your needle into the st and knit it but don’t drop it off the left needle, bring the yarn between the needles and purl that same st but don’t drop it off the left needle, bring the yarn between the needles to the back and knit into that same st, this time dropping it off the needle. Now you have 3 sts.
Give it a try, it’s much stranger to think about than to do.

Basically you CO1 because you’re starting by making the earflaps first, from the Point up. So yes you cast on 1 st, next “knit into stitch” means you are increasing. Looking at the directions it says:
[B]Knit, purl, knit into stitch (=3st)[/B]
Basically you’re doing a double increase, which gives you 3 sts from the starting 1 st. I couldn’t find a video here for the double increase but I found one on Youtube. Here’s the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP_UHylNAMQ

Oh thank you so much for your explainations - they helped so much and I have repeated it now a couple of times to make sure I have the hang of it.
