Backward knitting

On Youtube you can learn how to do "backward knitting’ to avoid purling and switching the needles in between rows. Im wondering if anyone knows a technique to do backwards knitting that would give you a garter stitch finish instead of stockinette?
Thanks~!:aww:

I would assume that you could do “backwards purling.” The backwards knitting that you do to avoid turning and purling in entrelac is simply doing the purling facing you instead of turning your work.

I would have to play with it a bit to figure it out,but you could do the same thing, only mimic the knit stitch instead of the purl stitch (i.e., stick the needle in the loop the opposite way and wrap it appropriately).

Sorry I don’t have instructions, but if you can understand the backwards knitting, you can probably figure it out.

You may put to much faith in me! But i will look at it and possibly do some more research. I can’t be the only one ever to have asked this question. Thank you!:knitting:

I taught myself to knit/purl backwards by holding the knitting the
right way and sticking the needle in for whichever stitch I was wanting
to achieve and then turning it so I could see how the needle was
going through the stitch. If you can’t figure it out I can get some
pics for you because I can’t think of an easy way to explain it!

I too have done the backward knitting and purling. This is the site that I learned it from. CLICK HERE

With regular knitting don’t you get garter if you knit every row and also if you purl every row? I think the same would be true of the backward knitting/purling just do one or the other every row and you should get garter. But then you would be knitting backward all the time. Maybe you want to know how to knit regular and then come back so that you kept it in garter but work backward that time? I’m not sure which combination of ingredients would give you that, but a little experimenting should tell you. Have fun!

Thanks you so much! That is so helpful. I’l have to check it out at home tonight. I can’t wait!!! Thank you!!!:cheering:

oh that looks great! Thanks again. I make the Christine baby bootie pattern all the time and recently EVERYONE is having kids and I just get to sick of switching back and forth for those ten stitch rows!! Thanks so much.

:woohoo: :woot: Just what i was looking for! Thank you so much. That is really really easy once you get the hang of it. This is a skill I will use forever. Thank you!!!:grphug:   :muah:

Yup _ I do a backwards “Norwegian purl” when I need knit stitches on the return row. It’s a bit tricky until you get used to it, but it works!
