I am knitting this sweater. I am wondering though, do I just keep on with garter stitch until I have the button holes done? Or do I go on to the yoke increases and just add the button holes? Also, I think my button holes are on the wrong side. I did the five rows, and my first button hole is on the wrong side instead of the right side… Do I need to frog and start again?
Just work in garter for 5 rows. The next row is in garter and also has the first buttonhole. The rest of the sweater in worked in stockinette stitch with the buttonholes spaced as the pattern describes, 2 inches apart.
Oddly the photo doesn’t appear to show the same pattern.
Buttonholes on the wrong side in regard to girl vs boy or are you working the buttonholes on WS vs RS?
As far as girl vs boy, it’s often disregarded now. Baby items especially handmade sweaters are often passed around and down in families and among friends regardless of whether the baby is a boy or a girl.
If the buttonhole looks fine from the RS then just continue with the sweater but work the following buttonholes from the RS.

Thanks for explaining that- but after the first button hole row- I will do a purl? The next instruction for the yoke starts on a right side row which would put two right sides together. I wish this was written so that it would just follow along and the button hole rows were added in

After the buttonhole row you could knit across the next row, the WS row which would continue the garter stitch neckline. Then work the Row 1 and following rows in stockinette.

Seems kind of unnecessary to arrive at a knitting help forum where questions are being answered daily and suggest to members that they go elsewhere to have their questions better answered.
As you don’t knit yet, and haven’t ever knitted, I’m not sure you would be best placed to judge if the advice here or there is better.
I agree with @ZKOhio, I also only trust his forum, where everything is open. Along those lines I’ll say, here in the open, that the private messages are not needed, any questions you have about knitting can be asked out here because they are best answered out here in the open where all members can view and respond. You’re welcome to ask questions about knitting out in the open forum pages.
On the other hand, if you prefer the private whatsapp group which you feel better answers questions then you can ask there. It’s personal choice after all.

I found a different sweater to make. It is a little small, but it’s okay- the sweater I ended up making had much more straight forward instructions! Ravelry: Oh Baby! Cardi pattern by Roberta Rich and it is turning out really cute. I will post a picture when I am finished

Oof, I don’t use Meta apps such as WhatsApp because of their policies, political stance and how they deal with data privacy. I too find the whole thing incredibly shady, especially since you messaged everybody apparently. Feels predatory honnestly. Also, coming to a small community and trying to poach members away, I find this incredibly rude.
