Thanks Jints. It even calls for the yarn I already bought for the sweater.
I’m not sure how I’d add a cable, though! Any ideas?

I think the only place that would work for cables would be right next to the button band because that area goes up to the neck stitches. Not sure though…
you can put cables either side of centre front, or down centre of sleeves or both. you add the button bands last so you can just do cable stitches each end.
I favour just going down the sleeves but …you choose.
the pattern starts you at neck with ribbing, then haves you adding markers to define, front, sleeve, back, sleeve and front. you start to add the cable in here,
for centre front, before the first marker, and after the last one.
or for sleeve, after first marker and before last one.
i.e if using the 6x6 cable below (10 st total), you replace the 10 stitches of st st with the 10 st of cable. if it doesn’t fit, just include the rest of it when you have increased for the shaping.

also when reaching divide for body, check size, as cables pull in a bit, you could then add a few more increases before dividing, if needed.
i would write a simple cable this way. based on an 8 row repeat. going R to L on RS, L to R on WS:
(RS)rows 1,3: purl 2. knit 8. purl 2.
(WS)rows 2,4: knit 2. purl 8. knit 2.
row 5: purl 2, hold 4 stitches on cable needle in front (or back), knit 4, knit 4 from cable needle, purl 2.
row 6,8: purl 2. knit 8. purl 2.
row 7: knit2. purl 8. knit 2.
on row 5, you are basically holding half of your cable stitches out of the way, knitting the last four stitches first. by purling before and after your cable, you are visually setting it apart.
did i make that clear as mud? i hope i didn’t confuse the issue.
WOW! Y’all are making me SO EXCITED to make this sweater. I’m starting my gauge swatch tonight and I’ll try your cable instructions with the swatch. I’m still debating between the patterns, so I’ll see how the swatch goes. Would it work to do the cable PART way down the sweater? Like start below the sleeve shaping on the front?
Yes you could start there, but IMO a full length cable would look better.
I think the sleeve cable would be awesome!
A favourite of mine is Trellis from Knitty.
It’s a Baby sweater done in cotton and you could change the center cable to just straight seed stitch if you like. But it does have the cables you are looking for.
That IS a beautiful sweater, but since this is my first cable experience, I want something EASY! That looks too complicated for my first attempt.
Thanks, tho!
Your instructions and Amy’s video help a LOT. Thanks!![]()
However, it looks better to switch rows 6&8 with row 7. To K the cable section 2 rows in succession makes bumps on the RS.
whoops. i must’ve written that backwards.
Whoohoo! :woot: I swatched my first cable and even made my own cable holder thingy. YAY!!!
Now here’s my question: I made my swatch 20 stitches wide. BEFORE I started with the cables, it was OVER 4" wide (about 4 1/4"). After knitting the cables, it’s about 3 1/4" wide. The Hailey pattern (which I’m gravitating towards) calls for 18 sts and 24 rows to 4 inches. Now, I’m planning on knitting it in the round and ONLY putting 1 cable on the front. When I counted my flat gauge, I thought I’d go ahead and make the 6 month size, and if it’s a little big, no problem. Now I’m not so sure! Any advice?
That looks great! You could also put a few more rows between twists so it looks more cabley and I think it might lay flatter. It looks good that way too though.
Now that you know it shrinks up in width I think you can just add a few more stitches in the front (even number) to make up for it. Maybe add 6 stitches or so?
That sounds like a good idea. I’m trying to re-write the pattern for circular knitting. I have a bunch of it done, but Here’smy request for additional help. THANKS SOOOOO MUCH!
