I found this super cute poncho and hat set. I want to make it, but it has a million instructions plus seaming and picking up stitches. Although I have never tweaked a pattern, there has got to be a better way to make it- I think seamless, top down and no fringe. I’m not sure here, but I think the pattern may be bottom up- is that right? (Just asking because I will need to know how many stitches to cast on.

It does look bottom up but the number of cast on sts will confirm this. You could knit it in the round bottom up or top down and it does look like it can be knit in the round. There’s only the shaping at the shoulders.
That said the Ravelry page seems to be for more of a poncho made with 2 rectangles seamed together (see the projects). No shoulder shaping in that case.
I wonder if there’s been a revision? Maybe you could contact Sirdar and ask?
