At knitting group a knitter was making a baby hat out of sock yarn - it was totally cute, except for the top. She had just gathered the top and tied it. I need a quick baby gift and have plenty of sock yarn, but I can’t find a pattern with a decreased top.
Thanks!
I did this pattern with sock yarn, I think it was approx the weight of opal, I used a needle up from my usual sock knitting needles as the tension didn’t need to my tight, and I did a matching pair of socks.

It took about 3 hours start to finish for the whole set.
and was approx 50 grams of sock yarn.
Here’s my finished set

Funny you should mention this…I am making one right now out of sock yarn!
I like to work with a multiple of 10 when I can for simplicity so I CO 100 and did about 1.5 in of k1p1 ribbing and now I’m doing the rest of the knitting. When I decrease I will k8, k2tog around, then k one row, k7, k2tog, etc. This one looks like it might fit a toddler, but I’m not far enough into to tell for sure. A newborn hat would most likely have to be knit on DPNs because they are so small.

Haven’t tried it but it looks cute
I’ve knitted an Elann Harlequin Cap with their sock yarn. It’s reversible and thus double thick. My nephew loved wearing it last winter, and now I’ll have to make a bigger one for next winter, though the next time I’ll avoid the provisional cast-on and just knit top-down and then bottom-up.

I finished the hat. It’s way too large for a newborn so you’d need to use a lot less stitches and probably use DPNs. I’d guess this one might fit a toddler or preschooler.

I was concerned that in decreasing that that stripes would widen, but it wasn’t a big problem and hardly noticeable.
