Baby Bootie pattern question

I am working on the following pattern:

http://www.knittingonthenet.com/patterns/babybootstwoneedle.htm

I am down to the part in the middle of the “Instructions” section where it says “Welt:”. I’m a fairly new to knitting and cannot understand that portion. Can anyone explain it to me? Are the 11 stitches I’m supposed to pick up the ones I placed on the stitch holder and when it says to knit them how do I do that when the other needle is still holding the 8 stitches at the toe of the bootie?

I just can’t seem to figure out how to do this and would appreciate any help anyone could provide.

Thanks so much!

Julia

You will pick up 11 sts (“starting at cuff end of instep, pick up 11 stitches along the left side of the instep by inserting needle in the little knots at the end of the rows”) These are not from the holder.

You will then knit the 11 sts from the last holder (the 11 from the end of the row when you put them on a holder).

Then turn and knit across the 30 sts (11 from holder + 11 you picked up + 8 at toe).

Now you pick up 11 sts along the side (" Pick up 11 sts from the right side of the instep, and K them").

Knit the 11 sts from the first holder you put sts on.

You will now have 52 sts. 30 sts from when you turned + 11 you picked up + 11 from holder.

how do I do that when the other needle is still holding the 8 stitches at the toe of the bootie?
You’re adding onto the row, so it’s right.

I hope this helps a bit. I’m not great at explaining things I haven’t done, or am not doing, but sometimes writing it differently can help.

There’s a video here:

http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips

that shows how to pick up stitches. (What you’re doing, basically, is taking an edge and adding knittable loops along that edge, in this case so that you can knit in the round)

Wenda & Isabeau,

Thanks so much for your suggestions!

Wenda, I was able to follow your instructions with no trouble at all. Thanks for explaining it so well.

Isabeau, thank you so much for the direction to video’s. I actually hadn’t looked through them yet. They’ll be a great source in the future.

I was actually able to finish my first pair of baby booties.

This site is amazing as well as the great people who always seem to be able to answer my questions. As a new knitter, I appreciate all of the help I’ve received so far. It’s helped me to keep from getting discouraged. I now look forward to each new project I attempt because I know there are so many wonderful people who can help me along the way.

Once again, THANKS!!

Julia
