Baby Bootie Pattern Question

Could anybody help with the pattern please? My actual question is after the pattern. Here is the pattern I am working on:

Cast on 33 sts loosely (use a slightly larger needle if you like to cast on and off with). Work a K1,P1 rib for 10 rows.

Eyelet row: K1, * YO, K2tog * . Repeat from *'s to end.

P next row.

Divide for instep: K 22 sts, turn, P back over 11 sts.

Continue in Stocking Sticth for the next 14 rows on center 11 sts. Break off yarn

Sides: Pick up 7 sts on right side of instep, K 11 sts of instep, pick up 7 sts on left side of instep, K11 sts to complete row - 47 sts. Work 9 rows in stocking stitch. ( It’ll be a little tight till you get a few rows up from the instep.)

Heel and toe shaping:
Row 1: K2, K2tog, K17, K2tog, K1, K2tog, K to end
Row 2: K2, K2tog, K to end.
Row 3: K2, K2tog, K15, K2tog, K1, K2tog, K to end
Row 4: K2, K2tog, K to end.
Row 5: K2, K2tog, K13, K2tog, K1, K2tog, K to end
Row 6: K2, K2tog, K to end.

Bind off loosly.

Finishing: Sew back/sole seam. Crochet a chain 16" long. Thread chain thru eyelets.

I don’t understand the picking up on the sides. Both of my needles have stitches. What do I pick up with? Do I need a third needle? I just don’t get it. I have already broken off the yarn.

Thank you very much.

I don’t understand the picking up on the sides. Both of my needles have stitches. What do I pick up with? Do I need a third needle? I just don’t get it. I have already broken off the yarn.

With your ndl (with the last 11 you worked), and the yarn you broke off, pick up 7 sts on the RIGHT instep area (easiest if you use a crochet hook to go down into the bootie sts and draw up loop of yarn)…place on ndl. Work the existing 11 sts (you now have 11+7+11). Pick up 7 more for LEFT instep, as you did before (now: 11+7+11+7). Work the remaining 11. 11+7+11+7+11=47

That’s how I envision it from what you posted.

Divide for instep: K 22 sts, turn, P back over 11 sts.

So you have 11 sts on one and 22 (11 that were just worked) on the other? Doing the TURN would have you working only the center 11 sts but they’d all be on the same ndl. Just make sure to work and pick up in the sequence noted (PU 7, work instep, etc.)

Does this make sense?

I’m sure you’re right. But what I did was that I had 33 stitches. For the instep, I knitted 22 stitches. “Turn P back over 11 sts” - I turned my work and went back 11 stitches leaving (not working) stitches 23-33 on the left needle. So, now, I have 11 stitches with eyelets, 11 stitches on that same needle with 14 additional rows of stockinette stitch, and 11 stitches with eyelets on the left needle.

What does “turn, P back over 11 sts.” mean? I think I misread it and did something completely wrong.

But what you said also didn’t really make sense to me.

Have I messed this up? Should I undo the 14 rows and start from there? But I still don’t know what “turn, P back over 11 sts.” means.

Sorry and thank you very much.

What does “turn, P back over 11 sts.” mean?

You’re only working the middle 11 sts.

Work 22 (now on left ndl). TURN (so you’re working on only the first 11 of the left ndl again…keep turning until you have the 14 rows), and continue working those 11 sts as stated in patt (you still have 22 on left ndl, 11 on right):

Continue in Stocking Sticth for the next 14 rows on center 11 sts. Break off yarn

So the outside 11 sts (one set on the left, along with the middle 11 and one on the right) have no add’l rows. Only the middle section was worked for 14 rows. Sort of like this:

VVVVVVVVVVVV
VVVVVVVVVVVV
VVVVVVVVVVVV
VVVVVVVVVVVV

Once you have this config, you’ll then do the add’l PU sts per the seq posted in the patt.

ETA: when picking up sts, the right-most 11 will be on your right ndl. Join yarn where RED V shows on lower right (above), pick up 7 along right edge of instep, work the 11 sts of instep, and then pick up 7 add’l beginning where second RED V is (upper left…in essence you’re working up, over and down), finish with final 11 on left ndl. HTH.

But my instep is 14 rows high. So, I pick up 7 going up on the right side, leave 4 rows, and pick 11 stitches already on the needle and come down picking up 7 on the left side? Sorry, this has confused me even more. And it’s because I cannot understand this properly. I am just going to abandon this project and find something “easier”. Thank you so much though.
