Attaching the Sleeves

So, I’m doing my first sweater. It’s this pattern. I’m at the final step and ready to attach the sleeves. When I knit them, I put the markers 6 rows from the end as directed. Now I’m supposed to attach them at those markers. I just don’t get that. Why should I do that? What’s the point of wasting those 6 rows? How do I attach that without having a big bunch up inside the sweater? Maybe I’m missing something…It’s a gift that I’d really like to give before she outgrows it…although I may not give it as it’s my first and I’m still not too confident in it!

It says “Sew in Sleeves placing rows above markers along armhole edges of Fronts and Back to form square armholes.”

The front and back aren’t straight edges along the armholes, they’ve got a little jog, kinda like this:

…|_ x
…|
…|

Those six rows you marked off will match at the corner I marked x to help you fit it in the square armhole. (ignore the … I had to put them in to line up the vertical lines)

Thank you! It makes complete sense now- one of those “duh” moments for me. The square thing was confusing me too!
