I’m making (well trying) the knitted shopping bag designed by Elisa,via the PurlBee Website.
It’s beautiful, take a look, however i’m completely stuck on how to do the Applied I-Cord.
I’ve read the instructions and you basically knit 5 stitches and pass the last 6th stitch onto the right hand needle, then you somehow pick up a stitch from the other bit of knitting (which in this case is the cast on or cast off row of the bag) and then you somehow knit it, then you pass the slipped stitch over that last stitch, so you are still with 6 stitches.
This sounds ok in theory but i’m confused, has anyone seen a video of this in action?
I would be interested in an explanation for this also. I’ve almost completed a very basic large needle cardigan and I’m afraid the bottom will curl. (There was no ribbing) I was thinking of trying to apply an i-cord trim. I can make a regular i-cord but I don’t know how to make the Applied I-Cord.

Sorry i know i’m being a complete dufus, but being newish to knitting some things just really confuse me.
Do i literally just with my needle, pull out the last stitch from the cast off edge onto my left hand needle and knit it?

I have just seen this video.which is very useful, but, it does expect you to have the ‘live’ stitches.
Without the live stitches are you supposed to just pluck the stitches out from your cast on/off row?

I just did applied i-cord on a sweater, and this is what I did.
I first picked up stitches (see the video that others have mentioned for picking up stitches) around the entire edge that I was planning to i-cord. One vertical edges I picked up 4 out of every 5 stitches (ie. pick up 4, skip 1, pick up 4, skip 1, etc.) and on curved edges and cast-on/bind-off edges I picked up every stitch. Then, once the stitches were picked up I took a spare dpn (or circular) in the same size and cast on 4 stitches, then slipped those 4 stitches onto the other needle (with all the picked up stitches), the stitch with the working yarn on it will be the 4th stitch from the needle tip. *Start working your i-cord, knitting the first 3 stitches, then do a SSK with the 4th stitch together with the first picked up stitch.
Now slip the 4 stitches on the right needle back onto the left needle and repeat from * until you’ve used up all the stitches, then bind off your i-cord and you’re done.
Round 1: K5, sl 1. Beginning at the right front edge of the top of the bag, pick up one stitch and place it on the left needle. Knit it onto the right needle, then pass the slipped stitch over it and off the right needle. You have six stitches on the right needle, and the yarn is coming from the last stitch on the left, closest to the point of the needle.

So does that mean i should create live stitches and have them on a separate needle waiting…
or…

OK once i’ve finished the bag this is what i’m doing.
I already made a mini version of this bag for my little girl but the sewing the icord on was a pain in the bottom so i will definately be doing it this way from now on.
I may be back to ask more on this subject, but for now i will go check out your blog.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I inherited a lap blanket which I use a lot. It is knitted up of 4-inch squares, but has no border. It’s beginning to come apart where the edges should be, so I want to knit and attach an I-cord. The videos look easy to follow.
