I LOVE your Watermelon yarn, CG ! Mine looked more like your colors, in the photos on Etsy, but in reality it is a peachy/salmony pink.
It was fun reading about your dyeing experiment on your blog ! Your Chinese yarn looks alot like what I did today…Celeste says in her supply shop that she’s going to be offering hand-painted yarn soon, and I think it will be the Chinese yarn, but it hasn’t showed up yet. I’m very curious to see how hers turns out.
I’m thinking tonight about one more experiment tomorrow…it’s supposed to be cloudy but warm, and then turn into true November weather, so it’s probably my best shot at working outside again for quite awhile. I’m kindof wanting to leave a skein mostly cream colored (wish it was bright white !) and just dot it randomly with red.
I just knitted up a little swatch (which I ripped back out) of the green, and the way the color plays all over it was just so lovely ! I NEED MY OPTIONS !!! I don’t want to wish away the last few days of the first 50 years of my life (50 more years to go, you know !) but, I WANT MY OPTIONS !:waah:
Hi knitmensch !..:waving: …WELCOME !

That sock is looking good…I guess that yarn was discontinued before I discovered KnitPicks…but I’m so glad I discovered them at all ! Such a friend to my budget ! (pricewise, not temptation-wise !)

I have a skein of KnitPicks Bare SuperWash fingering weight soaking in vinegar water overnight, so that it will be ready for me to start dyeing when I get up tomorrow ! I’ve read that kool-aid is acidic, so vinegar is not necessary, but I figure it doesn’t hurt to cover all of the angles ! Still haven’t decided on a color…I’d love to have some purple socks, but kool-aid’s purple is not the hue I have in my head…maybe I’ll mix some red and blue and see what that looks like. I don’t know…hey, perhaps I’ll be led by tonights dreams…wouldn’t that be funny?

Anyway, I’m off to beddy-bye…night all !

Christine~ I hope you guys have a wonderful trip for Christmas :happydance:
Carla~ I knit contiental most of the time but I can knit english style…I usually don’t use this unless I’m teaching mom something…the time I get depends on the kids and dh …somedays I don’t get a chance to knit…some afternoons I knit while Roo naps… most of the time I pull late nights knitting if I haven’t been able to during they day… Great order from KPs… I really like the New pathways book… several socks I want to make sometime :teehee:
CG~ Thanks, I’m still a little sore this morning…but nothing like yesterday when I got up…Your sock looks wonderful and I love the colors!!! I might re-dye up a green I Have… I like how yours turned out… :happydance:

Hi Jackie and GJ!!
Debroah~ Welcome to the KAL :woot: …Your sock looks wonderful!!!
I didn’t get to knit at all yesterday…I’m hoping today I can and I might just knit Roo’s had english so I don’t have to use my left side as much…
Hope you guys have a great day for knitting!!
hi dotty.
i’ve been so tired. I am finally getting over my cough/cold. I’ve been pretty busy with ebay, I’ve been saling Hallmark ornaments on there. I haven’t done much knitting lately, I started on Mr. turtle but I’ve finished the body and one and half legs. I’m using the pattern from Knitty( Sheldon).
I’ve sold two skeins of sock on etsy, I still need to dye my superwash sock yarn… But I haven’t had any good colorway ideas.
Rorygilmore: glad to hear youre starting to feel better, colds are aweful when youre pregnant!
Dotty: you should try some malabrigo yarn, that’s what my scarf is made of and you can get it cheapest on e-bay. It’s soooooo soft. I like the scarf you’re doing too-very pretty yarn.
Still pregnant-let’s see if she’s born today the yarn goes to Becka, who hasn’t posted in a while, but I know she’s busy knitting b/c I got an email from her the other day. We’re waiting for our cinnamon rolls to be done and then we’re gonna change clothes and head out to the drag strip-dh wants to get a few more runs in before the ‘season’ is over. sigh.
GJ has tomorrow’s date and Dotty has Tuesday the 13th…wonder when she’ll come? The next person, Dustinac, is Nov 16th and then it’s Msannomalley on the 23rd, Jeanius on the 24th and BostonBecca on the 25th and then we’re into Dec. Dec. 1 is the 1to1, then dec 3 is foxyie and that’s it.
i went to the Blue Moon Fiber Arts Stash sale in OR yesterday, bought a few skeins of sock yarn (like… ummm 7) and some worsted weight wool to make dda sweater. i started knitting my mom some socks, in the Lornas Laces bee stripe colorway. I am going to attempt the Swirl sock pattern…I’ll have to take notes, as the pattern is written for one at a time, and the swirls go in opposite directions.I hope it looks great in the yellow and black stripes! I have to restart dh grey socks, as they are just too wide, and i want him to LIKE his handknit socks
not want to hide everytime i give him a new pair :teehee:
dotty… lovely baby socks! just too cute. and i love the green yarns you dyes, very subtle, should look great once knitted up!
baby caitlin… stay in longer! get bigger and stronger
Julie- lovely baby sweater, it’s so tiny! and that ornament is amazing! very impressive.
Fabulous yarns is also a great place to order Malabrigo. I love the curacao and citrus colorways! i want to get some in the future i have the alpine pearl (very pretty!) and some peach tree and half a ball of cuarenta. I love how soft it is, and very pleasent to knit with! I think i am going to make another pair of mittens with the alpine and then make a striped hat with the left overs from cuarenta and alpine (very silly, but… )
Whoowhoo!! Tomorrow’s the day! You’re ready, right, JBerry???:cheering:
(No pressure…)

Dotty, I’m not pregnant! (Heaven forbid! My husband had the snip snip years ago, so that would be a HUGE problem!)
My SISTER is pregnant with her 5th, though, so that’s probably what you’re thinking of. She’s NOT yet happy about it, so I’m knitting her some socks. At the rate I’m going the kid will be two before my sister gets her socks. They were too big, so I had to frog back, and you know I can’t knit for long, so I’m STILL not where I was before I started frogging.:hair:
Did y’all see that Silver has a new tutorial? It’s one toe-up sock on two circs. Her tutorial is what got me started on sock knitting! YAY!
Morning,
No KPs yet…still waiting,
GJ, pls send my regards to your sister, Congratulations to her. Wow, #5 on the way…
Tks for the Silver’s site.
Dotty, how about dyeing blueberry or minty green colouring ? Would love to see.
Dustinac and Rory, hope u r getting better today.
Julie, I like the phrase “still pregnant”…it put a smile on my face.
Jeanius, I have yet seen or touch a Malabrigo yarn yet (sigh) i love the Verdes.
GJ, you’re right…I remembered you saying that the baby was going to be 2 by the time you finished the socks, but I didn’t catch that you meant your sister’s expected baby, not yours !
Jackie, these Kool-aid colors tend to want to be bright ! When today’s skein of sock yarn was putting my eyes out, I doused it with a mixture of everything I could put together. I thought I had ruined it, but now I can’t wait to knit it !
Hereis today’s experiment on my flickr page.
Dotty, what a colour, not bad at all !
yup you guessed it, still pregnant~ just had to update y’all and let you know. Tomorrow would be great then they’d all be born on the 12th of their months-but I have a feeling that she’s not ready to come out yet-I’d like her to, but don’t think she’s gonna listen to me. time will tell.
Dotty: I like the brown, isn’t dying fun?!
Thanks for all the compliments on the ornament, it was just a bunch of short rows, very easy to do.
Didn’t get any knitting done today, but we did have fun at the dragstrip. Tomorrow will be a homework day.
Julie, my DD was born on the 39th week, weight at birth 2810gm, length at birth 51cm, head circumference 32cm…
Dotty, I love that brown with the green. Very fall looking. Can’t wait to see what you make with it.
I finally finished my second sock. :woot: They came out a bit too long, but that worked out ok, because I can wear them with my flip flops.:teehee: I had originally made them ankle socks but decided to make the cuff just a bit longer because I liked the ribbing.:knitting:
I love all the socks you’ve made. I’ve been to busy to keep up, so I don’t have enough time to comment on every single one, but all I’ve seen is really pretty!
1to1, sometimes I really hate living in the Netherlands. It’s really hard to find woolfree sockyarn. I usually use yarn that isn’t made especailly for sock. I do have some cascade fixations from swaps, but that isn’t available here. The best I can get is lana grossa elastico (I’m knitting with that atm)
I’ve watched the video and read some stuff on Magic Loop. It seems straightforward enough.
I’ve also dug into some basic top-down sock tutorials using DPNs. These also make sense. (I haven’t tried any socks yet, but I’ve used DPNs for a hat and I got used to it well enough.)
But I don’t see how to apply the Magic Loop to the sock process. Most of the Magic Loop / sock info I’ve seen involves toe-up knitting.
So it seems to me either 1) magic loop is useful for toe-up but not top-down; or 2) I’m not looking in the right places!
I’m also not clear if there’s any difference in the finished product between top-down or toe-up.
Can someone briefly enlighten me?
Good Morning Socksters!! :blooby:
Alex~ I hope you feel better soon
jeanius~That’s a great pattern and thanks for the link for malabrigo…I have 3 skeins of Velvet Grape I bought over a year ago on sale… I haven’t found the perfect pattern for it yet …I think I want a wrap so I can wrap myself up in it :teehee:
GJ~I’m sorry to ready you had to frog them again … Congrats to your sisiter on her 5th…
Jackie~ Thank you, I am feeling better :happydance: …I hope you KP order comes soon!!
Hi Lieke!!
dotty~ Great color it looks perfect for fall… :happydance:
April~ They look wonderful :woot: …
SteveDallas~ Welcome to the KAL :happydance: …I found thisblog that gives links and tips for cuff down magic loop that may help you…I think it easier to get the ML started working toe up…I tend to get a gap when I start at the cuff…so sometimes I’ll start the cuff on dpns and then go to ML when I’ve worked a few rnds…I prolly need to read over those tips :teehee: …To me working from toe/up or cuff/down is really your personal taste…it’s how you enjoy working the sock… I really don’t see any difference in working them either way…some say you can try it on easier toe up but I haven’t found this to be the case… and some say you can better judge how far your yarn will go if you go toe up…I’d suggest you give both a try and then decide how you like your socks
:woot: I was able to knit yesterday… I couldn’t knit English threw my gauge out… but with pillows propped up all around me and my knitting held far in my lap…I could knit :oo:…it’s feeling even better today so hopefully I can get back on the kid’s hats and mittens…
I hope you guys have a great day of knitting :happydance:
SteveDalas: I agree with what Dustinac said, and I only knit magic loop anymore. I did learn with 4 & 5 double point needles but really prefer magic loop, esp since I have 2 little ones that sometimes get curious, at least then I have the needles attached by a cord and I can fix it faster. There is also a book called magic loop, it’s a little book and it’s $7.00 and has two sock patterns in it to teach you how to do magic loop sock knitting-one top down (adult) and one toe up (baby). I have it and like it, it clarified a few things for me. The website I was looking for -that I used alot- has been suspended, not sure why. You can adapt any sock pattern to the magic loop (ML) method, it’s easiest to find a pattern written for two circs and then adapt it to the ML but you can do 3 & 4 dpn patterns too. If you need help let us know. Do you have a pattern in mind? I do most of my socks top down on ML but have done baby socks toe up (my pattern on my blog-click the purple sock in my sig). All you have to do is take the total # of sts to cast on and divide them in 1/2 then 1/2 go on one needle and 1/2 on the other. try this link, see if it helps-may be easier than reading through my instructions; but we’re here if you need us & WELCOME!
Good Morning Socksters,
Please check out my brand new blog for my KnitPicks order review. Yes, I know, I’m a little behind the time with starting a blog.
Deborah, Welcome to this wonderful group. :waving:I love your clean sink. Mine looks like your before picture and after seeing yours I think I’ll have to try FlyLady again. I tried it several years ago but was overwhelmed with all the emails. Your sock looks perfect—great job.
Alexandia, The Lightening Pink sock yarn is beautiful. I really need to get through some of my stash before I buy any more sock yarn but I did save your etsy store as a favorite.
Jean, I am so jealous that you got to go to a Blue Moon Fiber Arts Stash sale and to actually buy some yarn. No Fair!!!
Gina, Thanks for sharing Silver’s new tutorial. She is the reason I started knitting socks. I printed out the 2 sock at once ML the day she made it available. IMO it is better than any book you could follow.
Jackie, what did you order from KnitPicks?
Julie, glad you’re still pregnant.
April, your socks look great. I need a pair like that.
Lieke, I don’t care for Cascade Fixation. I really like your cable socks and I’m still drooling over your pink socks. (hadn’t noticed this little disguising guy before).
Steve, I highly recommend that you check out Silver’s Tutorials http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/ . I agree with Dustinac about toe-up/cuff-down its all preference. I personally like two toe-up socks at once. But am currently working on cuff-down socks.
Dustinac, I’m going to have to look into making some of those sock blockers. I’m just using the hangers that you bend http://www.needletrax.com/blockers.htm .
Hope everyone has a productive knitting week.
Sock on,
Carla
hi all!
i’ve only knit one pair of socks so far, and yesterday i bought some worsted weight yarn to knit another pair. (my first pair was on sock weight, 7 stitches per inch on US size 4.) the yarn tag says it should knit up at 16 stitches over 4 inches on a US size 10, but i’m wondering…should i use that needle size for socks, or do you generally want them to be a tighter knit? i’m wanting to make thick house slipper-socks (never to be worn with shoes). i’ve started swatching, and i did about 10 rows on each of sizes 8, 9, and 10. on the size 8, i’ve got about 11 stitches over 2.25 inches, and on the size 10 those 11 stitches take up just over 2.5 inches (i wasn’t thinking clearly and only cast on 24 stitches, and i’m knitting a tube, so i’ve only got 12 per side…but it looks like on the 10’s, i’m knitting at 4.25 stitches per inch instead of the 4 per inch listed on the tag)…i don’t know how dense the fabric should feel…it definitely feels VERY dense on the 8’s.
any advice on which needle would be best for some house socks? sorry for the rambling question, and thanks in advance!
