Any Sock KAL

RoryGilmore…I have my KnitPicks order out in the mailbox right now…decided to send them a personal check. I hope it’s safe to do that !

Anyway, I’m getting a 32" circular in the bigger size 1, and the smaller size 2…hopefully ! They were out of the smaller size 1, and you never know…by the time they get my ‘snail mail’ order, they may have sold out of one or both of the others. They had those coil-less safety pins that I’ve been wanting, for when I do the Japanese short-row method, so I ordered those. The times I used that method, I only had regular safety pins, and a couple of them had to be cut out with pliers because the yarn got caught up in the coils. I also took a small plunge, and ordered ONE skein of Bare superwash fingering weight to dye. Up to this point, I’ve only dyed light colors that I already had. Now I’m wracking my brain to decide what color I want to dedicate to this skein. I may MAKE myself stick to ONE color, with varied tones, BerryBlue, perhaps…but all the colors tempt me so !

I took a try at those baby socks that someone showed on Flickr,
http://www.flickr.com/photos/recyclemicol/1196669230/

and was disappointed in the lack of stretch, so I’ve changed to 1 x 1 ribbing for the instep part of the foot, but I’m not thrilled with it. And I’m using my size 0 dpns and feel like I’m BENDING them with every decrease (I tend to really grip the needle when decreasing… ) I have NO NEED for baby socks…just playing around until I get more long circulars !

I have both grey and black yarns set aside for socks for hubby, but only one 500 yard skein of the black (2 of the grey). And he says he only likes TALL socks. His foot is not overly large for a man, size 9, but I’m afraid one ball won’t make two tall men’s socks. Guess I’ll start with the grey and see how far it goes before I try the black. I know people usually go ‘toe up’ when they’re worried about running short of yarn, but #1…I can’t find the inside tail of yarn so that I can knit two at once, from each end of the skein, and #2…it wouldn’t do me any good to get two done to the point of 6 inch shafts and see that I have no more yarn, and the man wanted 9 inch shafts !
(I really wanted to use the grey for knee socks for me, but that’s a whole 'nother story, cuz I haven’t worked out the elasticity problem yet !) I am not doing ‘just ribbing’ for him, though…I know I can’t do Monkeys, but I’ve just got to do some kind of patterning ! Nancy Bush has some good ones.

RoryGilmore said…I tryed to start a shrug but about 12 inches into I realized that its too small. I’m going to restart but the yarn is evil, I’ve tryed two different sweaters with it and frogged them both. I didn’t have enough yarn for the first and i just didn’t like the second.

Ok sorry about all the whining.
I meant to mention that I had some evil yarn once that WOULD NOT let me make a hat out of it ! I bought it (chenille, Jewel Box by Caron ) to make my daughter and granddaughter matching hats, and gave it atleast 7 tries before giving up ! I put 5 skeins into a bag at my garage sale, and when a woman finally struck up a conversation with me about knitting, I told her about my problems with the yarn and asked her if she would like to have a ‘go at it’ for the price of $1.00 for the whole bag. She accepted the challenge, and I was thrilled to see the last of it !

No more chenille for me !

hey dotty… i was thinking about your dh’s tall sock request (mine is the opposite! he was shorties :teehee:) could you use a contrasting/coordinating color for the toes and heels to give you a little more mileage for the cuffs?
rory- i just dyed some pretty yellow sock yarn! I used the donegal bare from KP. it has bits of orange and some very liht almost white areas. i can’t wait to knit it up! I’ll take pics today when its all dry…:yay:

That’s a very distinct possibility, jeanius…I love socks with contrasting toe and heel, and I have a yarn in the same weight that would contrast perfectly, as long as I don’t choose a ‘fancy’ design that would look funny with contrasting heel and toe. That look is more casual to me…probably why I love it !

New endeavor ------------- I figure as long as I have all of you here for moral support, I might as well try two socks at once in the MagicLoop method. It was confusing as all get out for the first few rounds, but I’m getting into the ‘swing of it’ now…we’ll see what happens when I get to the heels ! I’m trying out a pair for the son-in-law, and since he’s military, I’ll just do some short cuff socks for wearing around at home on days off.

Here’s a shot, but not very good…you know I’ll upload a better pic if they turn out well. But I’m really diggin’ the idea of not having to start over again from the beginning for the second sock ! I did two at once on two sets of dpns, once, and it just wasn’t the same…felt like I had two separate projects going, and trying to keep at the same point…:eyes:

those are looking great! i started my dh’s grey grey grey socks… i cast 16 each half(32 each sock), and have increased to … 26/half(52 each) each side. i need to get to 40/half (80 each) for the foot! so more than halfway with the toes

dotty… I can’t bring myself to sale this yarn. it’s Noro Implession and from my step-mom. I almost can’t stand knitting with it but it will become a circular shrug, I will make myself knit with it.

It is hard to knit toe up socks with both sock on one circ needle?

rory, I just can’t even phathom doing two at the same time, toe up !!
I wonder the same thing…I’m doing cuff, down. And nobody has mentioned how crowded the needle is while you’re knitting, and how you have to hold on over the stitches…I guess all that is just normal adapting.
I can’t even imagine me doing my provisional cast-on for toe-ups , but I’m sure I’ll try it ! I haven’t mastered any of the magic cast-ons yet.
I’m curious about a picot edge done this way, too, especially two at once !
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh…so many adventures ahead of us all !:heart::heart::heart:

I always forget to mention something when I’m responding to you, Alexandria !
I wanted to tell you that you should show off your newly dyed and listed yarns in the FiberFriday thread tomorrow on Etsy’s forums ! Last week, no one else started it , so I did !

I really shouldn’t tell you that because they’ll probably sell fast at your prices, but I just spent my money at KnitPicks, so all I can do is look at your lovelies and drool !

:woot:Yay! for trying two socks at once on ML… I need to try this that way I don’t worry about Second sock syndrome and I could move on to my next pattern :teehee:

I have yarn that is like that too you want to make something out of it but everytime you try… it just won’t work… the sock yarn I’m using right now for scrolls was hand dyed and is kinda dark… I’ve frogged that yarn so many times trying to find a good pattern for it… I’m hoping this one will work

rory, you were not whinning
jeanius~can’t wait to see the socks for dh

Rebecca has several guy sock patterns on her sitethat she made for her dh… I just wouldn’t be able to get my dh in a pattern sock I’m afraid… maybe my dad though…

Those baby socks are cute!!

Hi Socksters,

I’m still knitting on my Gansey Socks.

Dustinac, I’m glad you mentioned Rebecca’s site. She has some wonderful designs for guy’s socks. Before I found her site, I knitted my DH a pair of ribbed socks and they are boring.

Dotty, thats great that your trying ML 2 @ a time. I love making 2 @ a time toe up.

I have lots of work to get to. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Carla

Hi Everyone!!
Maybe we should start a Any Man’s Sock Knit Along to get inspired about all this grey and black yarn!!

Knittynewbie, maybe we can cast on for our black socks together and commiserate together. Or knit a little on the black socks, a little on some hot pink ones. Hope your hubby is home soon!

And speaking of pattern sites, I meant to post this one the other night (though you may have all seen it already).
I spent way too much time clicking here instead of knitting!!:knitting:

http://www.knittychick.com/free_sock_patterns.htm

I’m still working on my self patterning sock, getting ready to decrease the toes when I spotted a tiny hole!! aagh!!! I fought with myself over frogging it, about 4" worth or living with it. So far no decision, but while I consider my options, I cast on for the Tumbling Blocks pattern I found on the site above with some Tofutsies. I love Tofutsies!!! This color is really pretty!
And I did something different this time when I cast on. I read about it on a pattern posted on someone’s blog. You cast on 1 extra stitch and when you would divide your stitiches between your 3 needles, instead of just slipping them you actually k/p your ribbing pattern. When you get to that last extra stitch you slip that on needle 1 and join by knitting 2 together. I’m not explaining it very well but does anyone else do this? It made the start process much more managable. I liked it.

Thanks so much for the link to Rebecca’s patterns…I printed off the Guitar Man Socks, and #1 Husband Socks.
Wonderful site !

I never planned what I was going to make two at a time,…just grabbed the only thing I had two skeins of, and went at it ! These are a bit funky for son-in-law, after all the talk about black and grey, but, hey, all I do is knit them…it’s up to the recipient if they want to use them as floor polishers !

I’ve now turned both heels, and rather than rearrange the stitches, I have all the heel and gusset stitches on needle one side, and the insteps on needle two side. It’s a bit crowded on the first side, to say the least, but atleast it goes down some every other row, with the decreasing ! I’m just glad that I’m doing plain stockinette on the instep too. I think it would be a bit awkward if I were doing an intricate pattern, with this needle so very crowded. Of course, I have directions of how to rearrange the stitches, but it just seemed too complicated.
But I think this is definitely the way to go on a boring sock ! I don’t even have to keep up with how many rounds I do, because I’m doing them both exactly the same, at the same time…I LOVE THAT !
I started in doing the heel flaps one at a time, thinking I had to, but then realized that I could do them together, up to the point of turning the heel…then I did that part one at a time. Is that how you other girls do it?

cinnamongirl, I spent atleast an hour on that sock pattern site yesterday, and found a few new ones to print out. There’s one called, Lacy Scallops Socks, that looks fun…and I thought I’d use the pattern stitch from the Little Shell Socks to make Zoe another pair.

Oh, that’s what I wanted to tell you guys !!!
I talked to Zoe (she’s in Germany, I’m in Oklahoma), this morning on the phone and I told her that I made her some boingy-boingy socks…she replied “do they make you jump and jump and jump?” I said, “yes, they do !” And then she worriedly said, “but how do you make them stop ? ! ?”:roflhard:

I was so tickled ! She’s 3 1/2 years old, and that’s the way her mind went. I told her to just hold very still, and say “that’s quite enough now, socks !”

I love that baby girl !

Forgot to show you my progress…

dotty… those are looking awesome.

I think I will knit my Jaywalkers cuff down on one circs. My KP order shipped today, so hopefully I’ll have my sock yarn and needles by Tues or Wed.

I ordered 10 skeins of bare sock yarn to dye. Today I’ve been thinking up colorways for them today. I’m doing a fall collection and a fairy tale collection. I can’t wait to get to dying!! :woot:

:teehee: dotty that is soo cute!! They look great…

cinnamon girl~ that link has sooo many socks… never be able to look through them all lol…

1to1~how far are ya on the Gansey socks?

rory~ the new yarn colors sound pretty…

nothing much to report here…I’m hoping that I can work on the socks today at the park :teehee:

Hey everybody! I have finished my mom’s Branching Out scarf and the only project I have OTN now is my socks! Now I can just focus on finishing my second one. I have been following this thread and everbody is doing a wonderful job!!

Can’t wait to see the yummies you come up with ! Did you order Superwash or regular? I went for Superwash in the one skein I ordered, incase I want to use it for the daughter or family. :happydance:

I ordered regular because the superwash is so much and I want to keep my prices low. I want to try the superwash, maybe i’ll buy some for myself sometime.

Welcome back, knitwit !

Did you post a picture of your finished scarf somewhere? I’d love to see it !

Hi Dotty :waving:

I haven’t posted a picture of my scarf yet, I plan on blocking it first… I want my scarf to look its best before the photo!

Anyways, if I have time I will be casting on my second sock today. Ugh, I really dislike the cast on stage, but once I get started it’s a lot easier!
